NOTE: I do NOT mean Instructure plumbing that makes the whole system function. Hi all. I was reading a post elsewhere about the posters Canvas timeout settings (session maintenance/browser keep-alive's), and different admins were discussing their values (24h, 48h, etc). It's a setting managed - rightfully so - by the allocated Instructure CSM. But I realised we don't have that setting actually documented anywhere in any of our config docs. And then I thought "What other does the CSM manage that affect our large, complex Canvas environment?" Anyone know a list without bothering our CSM over this? (they have bigger fish to fry at the moment).

What you're making very clear is that there are two levels of dealing with dates when setting up a Catalog listing. 1) course availability that also includes never-ending for self-enrol OR fixed delivery OR ... (start/end) 2) enrolment availability (open/close). I haven't bothered to check, but I doubt there is any validation to ensure the two sets of dates are in alignment. ie: - you can enrol into a course, but it's not running. - you can't enrol into a course, even though it's current. This matters for the sub-catalog admin who needs the ability to interrogate the course (as perhaps one of the account admins in the sub-account within Canvas), as well as the business unit/departments' directive to make these courses available. (we're government level, these things never trivial, even when they are)

Early days for Catalog for us. It is possible some of our Catalog courses will have mixed enrolments self-enrol via Catalog (certificate issued) manual enrolments into the Canvas course directly. SIS/integration into the Canvas course directly. I'm just working through what to do with use-cases (2) and (3) and certificates, see if the API can be used to create and issue certificates for enrolments into the Canvas course directly. @albertina_clayt did you ever work this out? Having the API call per-entity is not uncommon. Was it a case of getting a list of course enrolments from the program and "For Each (user)", looping over them to get each certificate information?

Leveraging the ability for Catalog users to see their Canvas enrolments within Catalog dashboard, and the fact that some users for a course will be internal (which we can force enrolment into the underlying Canvas course via integration) - and external (which we can't), I'm trying to come up with a Certificate Solution that covers all. If the enrolments is through SIS/integration: there is no certificates, make other arrangements**. if the enrolments is in any way manual ... there is no certificates, make other arrangements**. if the enrolments are via Catalog as self-enrol, they can be issued certificates (provided they meet completion criteria). Is this correct? ** To be determined.

@geoff_price The thing not to lose sight of is what Catalog can provide. Assume existing courses built within Canvas LMS. Catalog provides a means of exposing the existence of these courses to allow people to see and enrol. Keep in mind: enrolling is the second step - creating an identity (for enrolment) is the first step ("registration") Related to enrolling is fee-for-course payment gateways (or not). Basic steps, in order. Canvas LMS: build courses, target of enrolments Catalog: create listings promoting the courses, allow enrolments, take fees (related: grouping by subcatalog for the user to see related courses, "programs" of courses to provide course sequencing) CRM: spamming "leads" as potential Learners. Direct to Catalog Course Listings. Does that help?

And as far as admins, the easiest way seems to be assign our newly created Canvas root account "Catalogue Admin" (with the "Manage Catalog" permission) to our Level3 support staff get the "Catalogue Admin" to assign initial "Subcatalog Admins" to selected staff to manage their respective parent catalogues ... and away they go... I can't see the use-case for someone external/non-staff to be a subcatalog admin, nor the subcatalog admin do more than create and manage course listings... but it's early days...

So love this. Thank you. You understand exactly, @nwilson7. our default domain URL from the Catalog install is a million miles long, so we're going to use our vanity URL for our Canvas LMS and add a subdomain for the Domian/Root catalogue. I was just thinking this morning that we could prefix all four business-unit-based "Parent" catalogues as Domain catalogs with a different subdomain in front of our vanity URL, or purchase another vanity URL (or two) from Instructure. That could be the basis for distinguishing "internal" vs "external" users. Your point about logins and accounts is worth considering: we'll start with our organisation's SSO for internals that currently works sweet with Canvas LMS. I don't yet know enough about the native Canvas accounts for identities that we'll probably use for externals (if we can't find another identity store we can hook into for authentication), and of course with many tens of thousands of potential users, we'll probably have all sorts of combinations. Hi. We're just starting to look at Canvas Catalog for our large complex government organisation. Ignoring our existing "Bread'n'butter" P-12 student learning using Canvas, we'll have both staff training and also governance-based compliance training for all education providers across our region (ie: not our staff). I envisage we'll have at least 4 top-level catalogues of Canvas Catalog, each benefiting from using a different "Path" URL to differentiate. These 4 top-level won't have any connection between them, completely different branding and configurations. Each of the 4 will have multiple sub-catalogs. Because of the desire to differentiate the 4 top-level catalogs, is it feasible to make each a "Private Catalog", deliberately not utilising the inheritance from the Domain Catalog, to set up the "Parent" for each to then create their respective sub-catalogs? I can't really see a need for www.(subdomain).(orgURL). but can for www.(subdomain).(orgURL)/Catalog1 www.(subdomain).(orgURL)/Catalog2. www.(subdomain).(orgURL)/Catalog3 www.(subdomain).(orgURL)/Catalog4 ... for each of the business groups responsible for their own listings. (the other side of the coin is differentiating admins for their own parent catalog but no other ... but that's for later) Thanks

I can just imagine the headache in trying to track down content if something needs updating. Is it in this Blueprint? Or it's parent? Or a sibling? Arrrrrrggggghhhh! If there's common content that will be across multiple courses, why not keep the 1 Blueprint - to - many courses ... ... and just use templates for the common content?

it may be worth looking at the granularity of this feature. For example, the context help side panel that appears after the Zoom LTI is installed points to the Canvas Admin blog on Zoom. The help in the blog points to Zoom LTI 1.1, but we have Zoom Pro LTI 1.3, so that blog help actually becomes a hinderance. The content in the Admin Blog is still accurate for some users, but not for our situation. We are a large organisation with support infrastructure like help desk and trainers for teachers. Our only option is to turn off this setting for every course, but unfortunately, this robs us of when it can be useful. The fundamental point is providing _accurate_ information for Teachers to reduce confusion.
