Hi Community Data Interested Colleagues. I have managed to upload an unzipped folder downloaded from our Canvas Data portal (one submissions_comments_dim files and one submission_comments_fact) to Power Query. Just one file alone adds nearly 600,000 rows to the Query. Some of the data is obvious; the comments for example, and another column has scores, while  another that has "/N"- not sure what that is?  Can someone offer any further guidance on what the 18 digit numbers mean? Some of these have a negative sign before them. I assume these are some form of ID designed to merge data from the dim files with the facts, but it's not making any sense at the moment!! Hi @robotcars, just been reading your thread replies with interest. Been with Canvas for 6 years and only now trying to get things working, now that I have acquired some skills in Power Query and PowerBI. My question to you is this. Perhaps I have overlooked the possible Data download options from the Data Portal. While I could see an option to download data relating to Grades, I couldn't see any options to download data on feedback and annotations in Speedgrader. The setup through the UI is that every assignment has to be downloaded manually. It would be great if these could be downloaded in bulk. Are you aware if this is available? Thanks in advance. ... To add to my previous comment, I attempted to replicate the issue on a test site, but could not. Given that no one else has commented with similar experiences in this space since the issue was first raised nearly 3 years ago, I suspect that what has been experienced has been a glitch of the syncing kind. ... @judy_harmon I discovered something along these lines as well. A teacher enquired why her students could see their grades even though it was showing on Speedgrader that the assignment was hidden. When I acted as the student however, the grade was visible and the hidden eye icon not visible. When in the Gradebook in teacher view, and I  hit the 3 dots alongside the assignment, Canvas let me hide the assignment a second time. When I acted as the student this time, the grades had disappeared and the hidden eye icon was now visible. Not sure if we should make a science out of this, but it would seem on the face of it that the process has to be done twice to hide grades for Turnitin assignments. ... View more

@scottdennis Thanks for your reply and for the confirmation. That the original vendor has discontinued the product is most definitely a mitigating factor for Instructure.  It's a pity that Instructure left it to folks like yourself to explain things. Considering the new RCE has, apparently according to the sentiments in the thread here above, divided opinions in the Community and, moreover, that moderation, as you say, is busier than ever, I'm, therefore, surprised that no one has so much as viewed or commented on the free tool I posted to promote the use of and help users get orientated with the new RCE. Rightly or wrongly, this is my perception, that when I posted comments back in 2016-18, responses would come within hours rather than days or weeks. Interesting rankings "in theory", but this tells us nothing about how the rubric works. The rubric tells us the parameters but not the values that need to be attributed against those parameters. Moreover, is there a real rubric somewhere that automatically scores against the parameters? Alternatively, does someone have a fulltime job of manually ranking every community profile? Furthermore, can any one tell us what happened to the old number ranking? Was it abandoned because it became divisive or has it been hidden somewhere?    ... View more

I am totally with the pro-new RCE camp and agree with SusanNiemeyer and RobDitto on this one. Some of the enhancements the new RCE does better than the old: Can upload images directly from local drive (previous an image had to be uploaded to the file area) The search (on 3 letters) facility alone is worth the upgrade. Searching for file uploads previously on a large Canvas site was, frankly, torture. If there was more than a page or two of images, you would be expected to "load more images" several times. Reordering A-Z/Z-A and by date only enhances that. This was something previously our teachers used to criticise Canvas for. If I'm not mistaken, linking to unpublished pages were not visible in the classic RCE. Now it is. Embedding third party content in pages with a lot of content was extremely onerous on the classic RCE. To place the embed code into the page, I would have to first add a place holder on the RCE, then go into the HTML page, find the placeholder and add it. Now all I need do is point my mouse/ cursor at the point I want the third party application to go, select the cloud icon, place the embed code in and voila! It pops in as sweet as a nut! SusanNiemayer is correct, a full screen HTML page could not be enabled on the classic RCE,  Now you can link to internal pages as if they were external pages, forcing them to open in a new tab. For me this is beautiful because if the internet bandwidth gets compromised, the student has to click the back button and wait for a not inconsiderable time lag. Now all the student needs do is close the tab. The colour palette is a leap forward too. Previously, you had to add the names of the primary colours to fill the table with the colour or go out of the Canvas site altogether, and get the hex color code. Not a problem with the new RCE! I would say there is one point that Canvas developers missed off the new RCE: the ability to link to a new page/assignment/Discussion/Quiz. I have queried this with our CSM and it is not on the immediate horizon for inclusion. I hope Instructure can see otherwise on that one? "Your instructor is working on grades. While your instructor is working on grades, grade and comment information is unavailable." For your students to see the grades, you most post them. In the Gradebook column header for the assignment, you will see an image of an eye with a diagonal line. That means an instructor has selected to hide the grades. From the ellipsis to the right of the assignment name in the column header, you can select Post grades, then select one of the options to post the grades to everyone or only the ones the instructor has graded. ... Jennifer, if the document is web based and external, I would envisage the same problem. If the document is stored within the Canvas File area, that shouldn't be the case. I-frames however, appear to be at the juncture of extinction unfortunately, and Instructure, and other digital resource based vendors, do not seem to have an answer it would seem other than the one suggested by Jeffrey.  A third party vendor has confirmed what Jeffrey has already alluded to, that it is they who are placing the blocks, so that Instructure would not be able to do anything about it, even if they wanted! You may have experienced a general slow down in response to queries put to the Canvas Community. Hopefully it's just a spasm or a seasonal blip, but I am finding response times tardy. Not sure if this has something to do with the current epidemiological regime imposed on societies or if it has more to do with the recent Instructure takeover. OK I think I have found a legitimate hack that is workable. It's not as attractive as the i-Frame solution, but it's preferable to the beige offering of the Canvas external website link tool. Use the Canvas redirect tool to create a link out to the external website. Then create a fancy button with any one of free online web or in-house tools, place it in the page you want to link out to the content, then copy the redirect-link to that button.
