Reply to text (SMS) message notifications for Conversations I would like to be able to reply directly to text (SMS) message notifications for Conversations without having to go into the Canvas App. This would allow for easier back-and-forth communication... |

@rseilham , thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing the same notification feature in the Teacher app -- I support faculty use of Canvas. In the meantime, faculty can use the Student app for this feature, but it would be nice to only have one app to deal with.

@rseilham - thanks for that data. Are students able to reply directly to the mobile app push notifications? That is, are they able to reply with one click? ....I'll try to test myself... Thanks! Liz

Hi Jill, I generally serve as a faculty mentor, workshop presenter, and local Canvas support. The latter would take up all of my time if I let it, so I often redirect faculty to the 24/7 Canvas Support Hotline, which we are fortunate to have. Faculty are not generally required to work with me, with a couple of exceptions: 1. Faculty who join our Online College Project receive a stipend (generally around $2500) to develop an online or hybrid course that has never been taught in an online format at our college. To receive the stipend, they are required to (1) meet with me several times while they design and develop the course and (2) undergo a final review by me and their chair and dean. I don't have time to do the bulk of the LMS work for them, but I do offer my own templates and course planning tools. See: Online College Project | Distance Education 2. Faculty who are teaching online/hybrid for the first time at our college are generally required by their departments to complete my 6-week Online Special Expertise certificate training course, which I offer fully online and hybrid. I'm starting to offer it in an "accelerated" 2-week format paired with in-person Bootcamps. I also send out regular video announcements via email with teaching tips and video "tours" of online courses taught by our faculty. I've also been offering live Zoom workshop sessions - the most popular are those with guest speakers from Canvas or @ONE, a state-level Online Network of Educations program for the California Community Colleges system.

Could an instructor who teaches several sections of the same course use Blueprints to push out his/her own new content to multiple shells (as an alternative to cross-listing)?

In place of SMS push notifications for Inbox conversations, I would like notifications to be delivered directly by the Teacher App so that I can reply directly using the app. Currently, it takes 4 taps to (1) open an SMS notification, (2) tap on a link within the SMS content, which takes me to the Canvas Mobile App dashboard, (3) tap on the Inbox, and (4) tap on the individual conversation to open/read/reply. Also, t he SMS app I use for Android gives the false impression that I am able to reply directly to the push notification. That is, it allows me to click reply to a Canvas notification for a Conversation and send a response. But, of course, the other party never receives my response. Some of our instructors are using other apps to communicate with students, such as Remind . See my Idea about this issue: Reply to text (SMS) message notifications for Conversations.

Solution: Provide the ability to insert a link in the description area for each Commons item. The person sharing the item could then provide a link to a Canvas shell that is publicly visible with the Commons item on display, so that it can be previewed in the actual Canvas environment. I've been providing a URL for items that I share on Commons for this purpose, but it's not clickable. Screenshot: (Also note my warning about overwriting, which is another concern about Commons.)

Agreed. If my memory serves, when I first started using Canvas a couple of years ago, I thought the message opened directly as @rseilham describes. Has something changed?

I might add that some of our instructors are using other apps to communicate with students, such as Remind. If we look at Remind as a model, I wonder if the Canvas app itself could alert users of new Inbox conversations and provide a more direct way of replying (rather than using push notifications).

Hi @KristinL - Thanks for your thoughts! In short, I'd like fewer taps to get to the full conversation message. It takes 4 taps: tap on the push notification to see the full SMS content tap on a link within the SMS content, which takes me to the Canvas App dashboard tap on the Inbox tap on the individual conversation to open/read/reply Screenshots of the 4 taps:
