@mwolfenstein as a reminder, the purpose of the Feature Preview is so you can test new features as we build it, and the purpose of the user group is to get feedback on new features. Please continue to use legacy discussions until you feel the redesign is more ready. We are still in beta and your feedback will help shape the direction of this product. We will not deprecate legacy discussions without surveying the user group first.

@mwolfenstein I understand your concern around our process. We validated proposed designs with institutions before this user group. Our product team takes UX validation and changes seriously.

Your feedback is very important to us. We are trying a new approach in delivering work behind a Feature Preview flag while we're in active development so we can get your feedback sooner. This means features will continue to improve and possibly get completely reworked. As Erin mentioned, we are real humans behind these posts who only want to create the most optimal Canvas experience for you all. Our entire team is focused on doing the right thing for our customers. Constructive dialog is welcome and encouraged but please, please lead with kindness. Discovery varies, in this specific case we're at the tail end of it. I'll create a post specifically around what we're thinking for our 1st release in the next week or so! Generally, our discovery phase at Instructure involves: understanding the problem gathering quantitative/qualitative feedback from customers designing solutions determining feasibility and scope with our engs (we are here) Once that's done, we build the work into our sprints.

We are definitely going to explore how to improve grading for Discussions. For this quarter we are focused on: the reply navigation (adding Expand/Collapse Threads back into the topic page instead of having to use the Thread Tray, as well as, being able to reply inline vs. in the Thread Tray) @mention (new feature, available now) being able to quote a reply (new feature, available now) moderation tools (new feature, in active development... first up will be the ability for students to report inappropriate or offensive replies to the teacher) anonymity (new feature, in discovery)

Hi @Jeff_F, the @mention feature is available in Discussions redesign. Legacy discussions does not offer this feature. The way it works is: when you type "@ + [character]" in the Discussions reply RCE you will see an address book that allows you to select a person in the course when you select a person's name, you will see the it displayed in the reply when you click the reply button, they receive an email notification that they've been mentioned in a post There is a new Notification setting for Mentions which is defaulted to notify immediately which you can change. Instructors will only see a notification if they are the one who was tagged.

@lshulman the Feature Preview flag is set to Unlocked and Disabled on our side which means you (or a root account admin) would have to Enable it or set it to a Locked state. Please submit a support ticket so we can investigate why you are unable to disable it.

Hi @Margi, the redesign is in production now but behind a Feature Preview flag so customers can test new features and provide feedback in this user group. You can enable/disable the Feature Preview flag in Course Settings. We will not deprecate the current version without surveying this user group first. If the feature is not quite ready for your course, you are able to continue using the current version. The redesign will be in a "BETA" state until we get enough signals from the user group that we are safe to move forward. Best, Katrina
