Possible to see course locations where uploaded files and images are used? I'm assisting an instructor with some spring cleaning of a course that's going to re-run in a bit and one of the items on the checklist is reorganizing course assets (mostly images) into file folders... |

Commenting to report I've received this request from computer science instructors at our campus as well.

Commenting to add support for this! It's a very common request, particularly amongst our humanities teachers. I've been suggesting they create no submission assignments in the gradebook for earlier check-in/draft due dates, but it's very clunky.

Yes, as far as I know (and have been able to find), you have to manually download all the submissions as well as also manually download the teacher comments. If the teacher and the student want to see their work in Canvas, the student has to resubmit. It's not great. (Ask me what brought me to this thread and what I've spent the last 30 minutes doing for one student in one class...)

Only platform admins have access to the permissions management interface, which makes sense. However, the construction of roles and permissions is a larger discussion with various stakeholders outside of IT. Currently the only way to capture what a particular course or platform role can and cannot do is to:
Click the role title to expand the fly-out pane
Copy and paste the information from the fly-out pane into...something else
Clean up the formatting
It's time consuming and not great.

Commenting to bump this. Given the reality of turnover in both IT and school admin (who come in with different views on who should have access to what), this would be incredibly helpful

This is pretty frustrating. I get the difficulty of trying to juggle multiple due dates/times, but it seems like if you filter by section first, you ought to be able to then be able to sort the assignments by due date so long as there's one due date/time for the section.

This is very disappointing. Good news is that it doesn't appear to be retroactive. I just checked a page where it was used, and it's still displaying correctly.

Heh. Because the Community is built in Jive, not an Instructure product. Still your point stands: Instructure recognizes the importance of this feature for an online learning community but hasn't implemented it their own product.

Some way to organize questions within banks would be incredibly helpful. The way we tried to deal with this in an advanced physics course I'm supporting is that we assigned each student learning objective a code (1A, etc.) in the field that comes before the question type (e.g. multiple choice, etc.) and then used that to label questions that addressed that concept. Because the banks alphabetize questions by this field, that groups them. I think if we were to do it again, however, I think I'd suggest we create a question bank per unit instead of by course because navigating within a bank of 50+ questions becomes quite cumbersome when constructing quizzes.

As it turns out, though, most faculty are not seeking to create a wiki; instead, they are looking to create webpages in much the same way that they upload documents and other files to the files area. The separate of Pages from Files doesn't really make any sense at all as a result. Pages don't have the features that would really make them work well as a wiki, and they are also failing as a collection of HTML documents. This a perfect summation of the issues I'm dealing with here. When things aren't pretty and aren't easy to use/find, faculty go on doing their own thing on a bunch of other platforms (they have that option where I am; not the case, I realize, with the overwhelming majority) because they are busy and understandably have other priorities. I mean, heck, I'm providing support for a department project that is bypassing Canvas entirely and opting for creating a homebrew website instead because it ends up being both easier from a production workflow and content management perspective while creating a much more attractive and navigable final product for all audiences. (Canvas will be suggested as a way for instructors to pull in and personalize the reorganization of that material for their classes, but again, given the number of pages involved, I am curious to see how this gets handled.)

A think a part of the issue is if a course has a lot of pages, the modules page can quickly become overwhelming to both students and instructors. (Case in point: I'm supporting the development of digital materials for an advanced physics course and with only three units done, we're already looking at over 25 pages, not counting the supporting many short formative assessment quizzes and discussion forums.) While you can collapse module content on the module page, it can take students and teachers a number of clicks to get to where they want to go later on in the term. I suspect the default show all is for accessibility purposes, but it means that I've had to do a DIY table of contents page, which is not a great solution because it's one more course object I need to maintain and test. I'm at a small institution with pretty light Canvas usage, so it's doable at the moment, but it's not a great scalable solution, particularly when this seems like functionality that ought to be baked into the platform: providing efficient learner- and teacher-friendly ways to organizing and navigate through a large number of objects in a course.

Just another data point that I've never heard of buying online courses off-the-shelf, but rather hiring a course design firm or contractor to manage the process and develop the content, but that said, I'd also look into open educational resources. In addition to Canvas Commons linked above, OER Commons also has post-secondary content ranging from textbooks to full courses. Other links that might be helpful: 16 OER Sites Every Educator Should Know (Campus Technology), Open Educational Resources (EDUCAUSE). (Note that some OER don't allow for commercial use.) How quick is your turnaround? When do these courses need to go live?

Commenting to hopefully keep this feature request trending. My current cheat is using a numbered outline system in page titles to keep them in some semblance of order, but this system fails when content is not being developed in chronological order (for various reasons) or for those courses where there is no linear progression. (I have some faculty who have very strong feelings about providing students with a false sense of linearity of concepts, which I can understand.) Being able to wrangle groups of pages in folders would help alleviate this issue.

Thanks for the reply, erinhallmark. I'm not worried about functionality so much as I am about privacy and security. Having the webcam and mic enabled when not in active use seems rather squicky to me. Even if cam and/or mic are not actively recording by the platform, it seems it's adding a vulnerability for possible malware on user systems to take advantage, particularly since all students and some faculty are using personal devices. Do you know if browser settings (requiring user permission before enabling webcam and/or mic—something both Firefox and Chrome have) override the Canvas auto-enabling on HTML5 pages? That would give a little peace of mind, although given that these require users to enable the feature and there's no way we can make sure all our faculty and students do so, this still raises red flags for me. Hackers using webcams and mics to spy on both desktops and mobile is a thing and with minors in the mix (I'm at a high school), we have to be a bit paranoid on their behalf. Also: what defines an HTML5 page? Is it any page where the RCE is available? A wiki page? Or any Canvas object (page, quiz, assignment, etc.) that has made use of the media recorder in the RCE? Sorry for the silly question, but I'm still not clear. Thank you!

Excited to see HMTL5 being adopted for the media recorder! I did have a question about the following, though: When a HTML5-supported page is being created or edited, the computer’s microphone and webcam are activated, even if the Rich Content Editor Media window has not yet been opened. What exactly does this mean? Is this a page where the page author has used the HMTL5 media recorder already? Thanks!

Have you been able to get margins to work in responsive columns? They always seem to shunt the final column under the first in my experience in Canvas like so: My workaround has been to add a border to the div or image in the same color as the page background, but I'd love to know if there's a way to get the margin property to play nicely in Canvas when using flex columns.
