+1 here for a large "DRAFT" tag to replace the tiny asterisk.
These measures would also make draft comments more functional:
All staff should see a notification on the front page of their site with a count of total unposted comments in the site. From the posts in these forums, we can see teachers are frequently not realising just how many unposted comments there are in a course, especially if the comments are posted by another marker.
Admins should be able to submit draft comments for teachers.
Instructors should be able to submit draft comments for TAs.
There should be a built-in Canvas report to pick up unposted comments.

Hi Tom,
I just tested this using Test Student so I could see what the student sees as well. In my site,
staff see the real total
students only see the total based on assignment scores that have been released.
It's confusing though; I wish there were an easier way of seeing what students see directly on the gradebook page.

👏 👏 👏 impressed!
That's a great outcome - I really wouldn't have expected that videos remained available after an account was deleted.

@Chris_Hofer, that's great testing - thanks for sharing!
One closely related question I have is whether, if a person's account is deleted (inactivated?), what happens to media they may have shared. Does it remain accessible, or do assets associated with that account get deleted too? As someone with limited access, I'm not sure whether Canvas accounts can be deleted, so perhaps this is a red herring...
If accounts can be deleted, a good test would be:
- as Frodo, make and share another video
- as a different user, use the shared video on a page
- as admin, delete / close / inactivate Frodo's account (whichever is the most strong removal technique available)
- as the different user, see if Frodo's shared video is still available and playable on your page.

You can definitely allow students just to edit the original spreadsheet by embedding it in the description box with an iframe. Don't use the "external tool" option. Instead, set "submitting: nothing". Then when you are ready to mark, have the spreadsheet open in one window and the Canvas gradebook / speedgrader open in another. This is because nothing will show up in speedgrader as Canvas doesn't consider them to be submitting anything. You could work around this by having the students "submit" the URL to the shared spreadsheet, but I'd imagine most would miss this part so it would just be confusing to have patchy responses. On the plus side, getting them to submit the URL would (a) show you in Canvas who submitted and who didn't - important if the class is large- and (b) allow you to mark more easily in SpeedGrader. Not ideal, but it would work. Totally see what you mean though; why isn't this type of collaboration easier to set up in Canvas? They do have "Collaborations", but when I took a look just now I didn't see a way to set a Canvas Collaboration as an assignment. I didn't look that hard, admittedly. (ETA: I went back and looked harder and yep, really don't see that Canvas provides a way to allow multiple groups to edit a single document and also be able to see the changes / the document in SpeedGrader, short of students submitting the correct document URL, which is very clunky).

Mark & Mark - YES! As someone who's come from 10 years of Blackboard, completely agree that this has been available there forever and it's just a basic requirement of a functional LMS. Export should be easy and everywhere.

And building on MKB's point above, this sort of calculated column isn't only useful at the end of a course: it can be very useful as a checkpoint, to help us make efficient interventions in large classes while there's still time in semester for students to improve. E.g. Count the number of null values (non-submissions) in a set of columns. So in our Logic unit with over 700 students, we could have a checkpoint column partway though the course that would allow us to "Message students who..." have missed a certain number of problem sets, and invite them to check in with their tutor.

Totally agree with Jes here! Users need to be able to understand why a rule ("lateness") was applied to them. From the information available to them, the system appears to be arbitrary. It's just basic good design to make sanity checks available to humans. For discussion, see usability practitioner Jakob Nielsen's heuristic "Make system status visible". Agree with @James Jones that humans don't normally work down to the second-level, but this information could easily be made visible in the submission details, just as it is in other systems like Blackboard.
