This checklist is fabulous - I love the rating indicators of what's expected all the way to exemplary. Our faculty will appreciate this course development road map and supports the best practices will teach in our Canvas training courses. Thank you so much for doing this and sharing it!!!

Hi Matt, We often use our wiki to create a curated list of self-help guides for our faculty. We will include links to the Canvas guides where applicable - in an effort to not recreate the wheel. Feel free to "R & D" our guide (rip off and duplicate). A link to our guide called "Open a course to a Subset of Students" is listed below: Open a Course to a Subset of Students - CIT - Geneseo Wiki Let me know if you are having an issue viewing the above link and/or if you have any additional questions on how to configure the option to open content to a subset of students. Thanks - Marie

We just recently inquired about the need to open up a past course(s) to a student who receives an incomplete in the course (for approved reasons). Our faculty do not want past students to have access to their instructional materials once a course has completed, so we don't leave them open (not even read only). Canvas recommended creating a section to allow a student or subset of students access after the course has completed for an additional defined period of time. Faculty can then further configure existing assignments by restricting additional access to the newly created section that may need to be completed as well. This obviously doesn't help with group or discussion type assignments, but does allow the student access to the content and ability to complete the majority of work to complete the course. I realize this response isn't exactly what was originally asked - but it was something we just learned to be quite helpful and useful for our institution.

Jennifer - I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think I've seen this with a professor on our campus. I had the professor go to the "Moderate This Quiz" link on the quiz itself. It listed each student and when we clicked on the student's name - we had access to their responses. Hoping this might help you! Marie

Hi Kona - thank you for providing the additional information which includes the caveat on weighted extra credit. We've asked Canvas support on numerous occasions. In addition, we hired a trainer to come to our campus during our implementation last summer, where we also inquired about extra credit in Canvas. At no point was the caveat on the weighted option ever mentioned. It has not, however, been an issue for us thus far, since our faculty are pretty clear about how they are grading with extra credit in the courses. Thank you again for pointing it out!

I've guided faculty who use weighted grade groups to create an additional weighted grade group for the percent above 100 that they wish the extra credit quiz can add to student grades (typically in the 2 to 5% range). I then have them assign the quiz to this weighted grade group and it doesn't matter how many points the quiz is worth, since it will only count towards the 2 to 5% of their grade. This also works if they use total points based grading by creating a grade group that is worth 100% for all other assignments and then the additional weighted group just for the extra credit assignment. Of course this option only works if the entire quiz is an extra credit assignment. so many of the faculty split up their quizzes to allow for this and auto-grading. I too hope for increased flexibility with the next version of quizzes!

Lisa - thank you for letting me know that. We keep getting conflicting information. Our Implementaion manager just confirmed today that file names do not impact processing, however, I've seen it make a difference well. I'm glad to know that I'm not delusional!

We've had this issue as well - the documents were stuck on "processing". We attributed it to bad file names. Students submitted files with characters, spaces and extra periods, however, we've subsequently submitted files with similar formats and they process just fine. Intermittent issues make it difficult to instill confidence in our faculty with this service. I wish I had more to offer.

Hi - my faculty and students in their courses actually change their keyboards to Spanish, to avoid typed words appearing as needing spellcheck. Canvas does recognize Spanish when it's typed using a Spanish keyboard. See the link below on how to switch on a PC and MAC: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/258824/how-to-change-your-keyboard-layout OS X Yosemite: Use input sources to type in other languages Hope this helps!

Brenda - thank you very much for the information! It was baffling, because the majority of students could submit without issue and then there were just a few who couldn't. The common denominator was Safari 9. Thanks again! Marie
