I don't even see a way to rename "student groups" that would help.

Good grief, another case of "Canvas knows what's best" that is going to create confusion and headaches. Instructors should have the ability to delete groups (and assignments, or whatever)!

If anyone at Instructure wants to pretend that the "idea" submission and voting process works, this example shows it DOES NOT. I don't think there's been a single response from Instructure explaining why it's so difficult to add a pull-down box so that students can see what instructors already can see. Highly unlikely it's a technical issue. This single glaring flaw would be enough on its own--much less as an example of how much Instructure cares about the core functionality of its product--for me to advise any institution to look elsewhere when shopping for an LMS. There are other problems (rubrics, for one) but this one issue tops the cake!
Somebody at Instructure, PLEASE, read these years of comments (we can't vote on it anymore so we just keep throwing these comments out into the wind) and tell us why this is still an issue.

This request is a clear example of of the process of soliciting input and ranking ideas DOES NOT WORK, at least not well. Years go by, and no one from Instructure takes any notice of what I consider to be a severe limitation of the LMS, one that confuses students and wastes faculty time when they make inline comments on submissions students will never see. And yet it works in the mobile app, apparently--which is almost worse, since it means that Instructure apparently has no reason not to make this change, they just don't care. I may sound overly pessimistic but any company that solicits ideas and then lets them languish for almost six years and counting is one that inspires optimism.

Having prior submissions visible on the app and not the actual online portal where students do the work is definitely a workaround, but a limited one. Very few students have a large screen iPad or tablet. Every student in our school does have a laptop and that's where they are going to submitting assignments and viewing feedback. I know Canvas is complicated and there are always things to improve, but clearly given the years that have passed this particular issue just isn't considered important by the company. Whereas if I were a king of my campus making the decision to implement Canvas today, this one issue might be the single biggest red flag I see.

After all these years, rubrics are a bit of a mess in Canvas. Perhaps the Canvas team knows this and is working on a major overhaul? The lack of editing capabilities is just one of several issues with how instructors create rubrics (so many clicks in surprising places), how that process is so very different for discussion boards, how students view (or don't view) the rubrics and comments, how the rubrics are copied (only via workaround or imports), etc. Is there a group working on this?

I have a theory that the mysterious "blank document" may happen when students attach a document that is stored in the cloud rather than locally on their computer. Typically you would sync the cloud to a folder on the computer so the document physically exists there, but it's also possible to have things stored only in the cloud and that may be related to this issue,.

Thanks for that effort. I do have an actual test student login I can use to see exactly how groups appear to students (the regular "preview" doesn't work because the instructor preview student cannot join a group). We use graded group discussions in every class, and it is impossible to prevent students from creating a separate (not graded) discussion response by clicking "discussion" in the group menu and then the "+ discussion" button (no ability t o disable that button).

So I can disable groups and still have group discussions? How? Send me a link to that document and I’ll buy your lunch, seriously. Student view doesn’t work in groups, in my experience. Sent from my iPhone

We are experiencing mass confusion in the groups area, which seems to be an entirely different world tacked on top of the regular LMS. Students are wasting time creating new discussions (no ability to stop that in groups) that faculty will never see because their new discussion is not linked to the grading area. Honestly, if I were asked what is the single worst thing about Canvas, I would probably say it's the design of the group area. In general, Canvas needs to give faculty more power to control what their students see. The "Bizarro Group Area" (where absolutely no control is given) is a prime example.

The "group menu" that replaces the regular menu makes me dizzy. In what user interface is it considered good design to hide the familiar menu and replace it with a doppleganger menu that isn't even labeled as such? And there's no easy option to get out of the group and back to the regular menu--you just have to know to click on the breadcrumbs (which of course have also changed when you enter "group world," violating the very idea of breadcrumbs). The entire design needs a re-do, but in the meantime, at least give us the ability to control what appears in that crazy menu.

So, it just happened again--much chaos and confusion because students created their own discussion forums in their groups which were not tied to a grade column. I suppose we just have to tell everyone NOT to click on the "add" button. Please, Canvas, give instructors the ability to customize as needed to make your system work the way we desire!

The inability of students to see multiple submissions may be most embarassing issue we have with Canvas and something that desperately needs to be fixed. Students get confused because they can't see the history of their submissions and faculty are literally wasting their time grading and putting comments into submissions that students cannot see.

I would be interested in knowing the solution to this if one is identified. I have had no issues with encoding and uploading at all--until one day, with a particular laptop, which I was trying to use to capture classroom presentations (Studio isn't a full-featured lecture capture tool but in theory it would have be sufficient). Out of eight presentations, only two uploaded successfully and other six were a total loss. I either got a frowny-face in the browser and the video was simply gone or there was a generic error message that the video could not be uploaded. It must have been something with the driver for the webcam, but when I tried in my office with that same laptop the next day, the videos worked fine. Are Studio videos stored locally, and if so, in what format? I wonder if I could have salvaged them by pulling them into an editor and encoding into mp4 or something more generic.

One of our students seems to have found a loophole. We have the ability to create discussions disabled in the class, which should force them to use "reply" to respond in the proper graded forum, yet if a student clicks on PEOPLE, then clicks "visit" in their group and clicks the DISCUSSION item there, they can then create a forum and post there (where no one is likely to see it). That whole "Group" area is very confusing to me, since you get a similar (but not the same!) menu along the left--kind of bizarre to create an alternative reality with no clear indication beyond the breadcrumbs along the top (and the slightly different menu) that you're not in where you used to be...and there's not a "exit" button to be seen! It took me a while to learn to get back to the real world using the breadcrumbs.

"Beyond six months" made me smile. Here's another IT'S BEEN FOUR YEARS and an idea that got a lot of good attention is still languishing. It's yet another "I can't believe Canvas doesn't think this is important" moment for me.

Forgot to add: given this issue, is it better to put "participation" as a separate item that is always graded individually? Although it's nice to have everything in one rubric, I believe it may be simpler to separate the "group" and "individual" grades.

This is very helpful but when assigning individual participation scores, it seems that Canvas could make things easier by allowing individual scores for some items in a rubric (participation would be the obvious one) but continue group grading for others. In other words, put the "grade individually" option into the row of the rubric, rather than just in the assignment itself. Having to toggle the setting back and forth (especially if you have to adjust a group's grade later) is a nice workaround, but still a workaround to something we are going to be doing in the majority of our classes.

We can't use the section approach because (faculty don't have the ability to create a section) so it would be very help if Speedgrader could also filter by groups. That's the actual functionality that faculty are seeking most of the time when they divide up the grading in a large class.

Well over 500 votes seems like a lot but apparently is not in the top 10% of ideas. After moving to Canvas from Blackboard, I agree that rubrics are one area where Canvas seems to be weak.
