The district controls all students' accounts and devices. Even I as a teacher can't install anything without IT department permission. @Bobby2 just mentioned that I can use Chrome "Speak It" extension. I will send the request to the district. They can install it with one click on all Chromebooks.

Thank you for willing to try it! There is one more tip to help your ESL student to work on Canvas. The student needs to go to his/her Gmail account and change the Language setting ( add the language he/she speaks). Then the student can log in into Canvas using the Chrome browser. This way, the Canvas page will appear in the student's native language. There is an HTML code! Directions: 1.Create a Discussion on Canvas 2.Copy and paste the code 3.Make SURE to relink the buttons to your pages or discussions: Lesson # (on the top) Learn More (on the bottom) Learn How (on the bottom) Ask your teacher (on the bottom) Otherwise, your students will end up in my classroom discussions, or it will appear as a broken link. <p><strong><a class="btn btn-primary" title="Lesson 7 What Do Illustrators Do?" href="https://jsd.instructure.com/courses/23858/pages/lesson-7-what-do-illustrators-do" data-api-endpoint="https://jsd.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/23858/pages/lesson-7-what-do-illustrators-do" data-api-returntype="Page"> LESSON # </a></strong></p> <p style="text-align: center;"> </p> <pre><span style="font-size: 8pt;"><strong>LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br /><br /><span> </span>SL.3.1d</strong> I can explain own ideas and understanding in light of the discussion.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 8pt;"><strong><span> </span>SL.3.1</strong>c I can ask questions to check understanding, stay on topic, and link comments to others' remarks.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 8pt;"><strong><span> </span>SL.3.1b</strong> I can follow rules for discussion.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size: 8pt;"><strong><span> </span>SL.3.6</strong> I can speak in complete sentences to provide details or clarification.<br /><br /><br /></span></pre> <p style="text-align: left;"> </p> <p> </p> <div style="max-height: 55px; position: relative; width: 93%; top: -80px; left: 0px; padding: 20px; background: lightyellow; border: 2px solid #ffff1a;"> <table style="width: 106.186%; border-collapse: collapse; border-style: hidden; height: 50px;" border="1"> <tbody> <tr> <td style="width: 19.3498%; text-align: left;"><img src="https://canvas.instructure.com/courses/1299089/files/90107150/download?wrap=1" alt="" width="52" height="49" data-decorative="true" data-api-endpoint="https://canvas.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/1299089/files/90107150" data-api-returntype="File" /></td> <td style="width: 80.6502%; border-style: hidden;"><span style="color: #3366ff; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>Type your topic here</strong></span></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p> </p> </div> <div style="max-width: 98%;"> <div style="color: black; background: lavender; border: 2px solid #ffff1a; width: 96%; padding: 15px; min-height: 220px; overflow-x: hidden;"> <h2 class="p1"><strong><span style="font-size: 14pt;">In this discussion you will:</span></strong></h2> <ul> <li>Share opinion on the discussion board using the sentence frames below to explain your thinking</li> <li><span>Comment on the reasons of one other student(s) using sentence starters below</span></li> <li><span>Follow discussion rules and etiquette. </span></li> </ul> </div> <p style="text-align: left;"> </p> <p style="text-align: left;"><iframe src="https://h5p.org/h5p/embed/552372" width="1090" height="138" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><iframe src="https://h5p.org/h5p/embed/552373" width="1090" height="81" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe></p> <p style="text-align: left;"> </p> <p style="text-align: left;"> </p> <p style="text-align: left;"> </p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong><a class="btn btn-primary" title="Lesson 6 Bats Loves the Night" href="https://jsd.instructure.com/courses/23858/pages/lesson-6-bats-loves-the-night" data-api-endpoint="https://jsd.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/23858/pages/lesson-6-bats-loves-the-night" data-api-returntype="Page"> LEARN MORE</a></strong></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong><a class="btn btn-primary" title="LEARN HOW ..." href="https://jsd.instructure.com/courses/23858/discussion_topics/30694" data-api-endpoint="https://jsd.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/23858/discussion_topics/30694" data-api-returntype="Discussion"> LEARN HOW</a></strong></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><strong><a class="btn btn-primary" title="Ask your teacher" href="https://jsd.instructure.com/courses/23858/discussion_topics/30692" data-api-endpoint="https://jsd.instructure.com/api/v1/courses/23858/discussion_topics/30692" data-api-returntype="Discussion">ASK YOUR TEACHER</a></strong></p> <hr /> <p> </p> </div>

I'm working in a school with many ELS students. I have to modify the learning content and my instructions to reach up to those students for whom English is a second language to help them be successful and happy learners. Sentence frames and word banks help many students to complete the assignments successfully during my in-class instructions. However, how would I do it in Canvas without putting a lot of text and overloading the discussion board? Lately, I was working on creating a Discussion with embedded accordions. I've decided to use accordions to provide students the sentence frames to help them to explain their thinking and for positive feedback on peers' posts, or asking clarifying questions. Also, I wanted to remind students about proper online behavior and etiquette rules. Let me know If you are interested in HTML code (to give ti a try), I'll send it to you. I'm looking for your feedback and ideas on how to make it better for readability to help my ESL and Special Ed students. Thank you.

Lately,
Many teachers are under a huge demand to teach online and, of course, teach effectively.
I'm receiving many emails from teachers. They are asking me to send the HTML code for 3Tabs Page that I've used.
So, I decided to post it here, and anyone who wants to use it can copy and make it work in their classroom.
Good Luck!
Please, let me know how it works in your classroom!
I appreciate your feedback!

Bobby, I appereciate the great list of resouces you've provided and being supportive of me! You are right. I'm using Canvas because it works out for me to reach the goals I have. Like Gideon, I think about students' engagement, how to motivate them and revord their learning. It shouldn't be boring, or discuraging. My another pedogogical goal is differentiation and personalizing learning. We are all different, and need to be taught differently. I think, Canvas is one of the greatest tools to utilize UDL principals. By the way, how do you add hashtgs on the post for the referencing? :smileyplain:I don't know how to do it.

I am 3rd grade teacher. My students use Canvas classes in daily practice. Canvas helps me create differentiated assignments and support students with special needs. Kids love it. I believe that other teachers will use Canvas to engage and support their students! For example, I use 3tabs page for reading comprehension/skill groups. Each student (depending on their reding level, or the skill that needs to be developed) has the group/tab/ they are assigned. After their done with their assignment, students may go on different page. It looks like this: Main page with 3 tabs: Each Tab has different assignments/videos for students . Here is a Tab 3 view: Also, here is the link to the video from my classroom. Send me your feedback! UEN PDTV: Canvas in Elementary Schools - YouTube

Gideon, Thank you for sharing with me the awesome example of highly effective instructional design that targets pedogogy, content and technology goals. It's very important for me to see different appoaches of using Canvas effectively to reach all of the students. Your desighn is perfect ! I'm very crateful for your input. It's very easy for me as a teacher to stuck just with one model, there so many necessary things we have to do in school, teacher's focus is always on the content. There's almost no time to think about the instructional design of the course, and see different possibilities to reach the content goal in more effective way. We need people like you, and your great ideas!

Gideon, You've shown us a brilliant example of great designing to engage and collaborate in Canvas. I love how you developed Missions and used badges to track personal learning path! ( reminds me Breakout EDU) Thank you for sharing. I will try to do something like this for my students. Looks like a lot of work, but I really like it. May you share the examples of the students' hangouts ? I'm not a geat designer and do not know coding, but I will try my best. I was triying to use badges last year, but for some reasons is doesn't work (on the "Complete Module" part).

How do you feel about using Canvas in elementary? I was using Google classroom on the daily basics. I liked it. My 3rd graders liked it... But.. I still wasn't satisfied . I was looking for something that will help me to teach effectively in the diverce classroom. How to meet the needs of each student where they are at for an English Learner, Special Ed. and Gifted students as well? One day I went on the professional training and heard about Canvas. That was class "Canvas in Elementary" (from UEN). That day has changed a lot in my teaching and tranformed my classroom. I use Canvas to empower, engage, assess and support my students in variety of ways creating meaningful and memorable learning experience for all students. Besides, I use Canvas pages as my lesson plans including the learning objectives, sets of differentiated activities, and assessments . I am able to design lessons that benefit each of my student. By using Canvas I meet my students on least three different levels of instructions: Whole class rotation (on project based learning), Small group rotation (targeting the misconceptions, re-teach and scaffolding up), and individual Self-Paced learning using Quizez and Quizzez.Next based on Mastery Pathes. Canvas Discussions benefit ESL, Special Ed. and shy students, who are not feeling comfortable speaking on from of large audience. However, they enjoy creating the Video and Audio responces which helps them later in face-to-face discussion.I use Canvas Discussions as a tool to activate students' background knowelege, as an attention grabber to introduce a new topic or a concept, and as a self-assessment, or quick exit-ticket. I really believe that using Canvas in Elementary will transform your classroom, help students to think critically and deepen their understanding of a learning content.
