My university is gearing up for limited F2F courses for the fall semester. Long story short – the students enrolled in F2F courses this fall will only go to class once a week – 1/3 of them each day in a MWF course. Instructors want to use the seating chart in Canvas for contact tracing purposes. Obviously we can create three sections in each course and add the students into their respective section for the Attendance seating chart, but the issue is that there will be a lot of classes and we can't do a csv file for all of them. We currently don't allow instructors to add sections on their own for fear of them deleting the main section that all students are enrolled in. Upon investigating a grade dispute from a student, I found a major flaw in the Canvas Student App. The student took two screenshots of their grades in the Student app- one after completing their final exam and one near the last day of the semester. In the first screenshot, the student has a grade of 70%. In both screenshots, all of the assignments have grades, but in the second screenshot, the student's grade is a 65%.  All of the tests in the student's course are completely fill-in-the-blank- meaning, the instructor still needs to review and adjust the grade before the student sees the final test score, right? Wrong. What I discovered when trying to get to the bottom of this is that the mobile app shows grades of non-multiple choice tests regardless of whether the instructor has gone through and submitted the grade or not. Oddly enough, this is only in the mobile app. On desktop, the grade is displayed as the rocket ship symbol. Because the mobile app still shows the grade before the instructor has submitted it, the student is under the impression that their grade is final when the grade isn't actually being calculated into the total score until the instructor grades and submits. There is no way for the student to know this if they're not using a desktop since the app doesn't show the total in points. This is a major flaw that needs to be addressed.  ... View more

I have an instructor who used the  "Message Students Who..." feature in Grades and she said the email was sent to every student in the class instead of just the students identified.  I believe she chose the "Haven't submitted yet" option, which caused quite a frenzy since students who had already submitted received that message. The instructor mentioned that the column the message was sent from was a Soomo column. Could this be the root of the issue? My first thought was that an issue occurred because the assignment column came from an external site, meaning Canvas couldn't really tell if the students had actually submitted or not, so it just messaged everyone.
