I want to be able to set up assignments like this:
Assignment Group 1 = WORTH 100 total max
Assignment Z = 20 pts
X = 25 pts
V = 25 pts
M = 15 pts
N = 20 pts.
See how that adds up to 105? There's built-in "extra credit" but it's not actually extra and nothing is worth only 5 points.
This is simple, straightforward, and not possible in Canvas. If I assign 105 points, Canvas averages from 105 points, and I can't make my own calculation or even hide the percentage from students.

Agreed. I want the option to NEVER display percentages and to always display ratios, including and especially in assignment groups that might be weighted (i.e. show, say, 60/110 but never show that as a percentage).
To go along with this, I would like the ability to assign more points than a max in a given assignment group, without having to fool around with "extra credit" (i.e. total assignment values = 105, but "max" possible in the assignment group is 100.) This would allow for some wiggle-room without having to make an assignment that was worth specifically 5 points.

I want to do the following:
Grade Group X = 70% weighted and has 100 total points max possible (or, rather, needed for 100%).
Grade group Y = 30% and has 200 points max possible (or, rather, needed for 100%).
HOWEVER
I want to ASSIGN 105 points to X and 220 points to Y.
I DO NOT want to make ANY assignments "extra credit." I just want to make assignments.
(In fact, even though Group X has a 5-point "fudge" built-in, NO assignment is worth only 5 points!)
Not being able to do this causes me to have to re-calculate my grades at the end of every term for every student. Not being able to do this also gives students an incorrect perception of where their scores are throughout the term. This goes along with another problem many have mentioned: We want to be able to HIDE percentages and ONLY show raw score numbers.
Please, Canvas, stop policing faculty. WE are the S.M.E.s when it comes to our grading systems. Give us more options, so that I don't have to go back to keeping track of grades via my own spreadsheets instead.

" Everything you're going to do is going to be a hack and so you're not going to be able to get everything you want. "
This. This seems to be how Canvas works for anyone not doing exactly the specific thing that Canvas allows the instructors to do. I'm so tired of loop-d-loops that I am considering going back to tracking grades outside of Canvas for most of my classes.

I just received a notification that the Instructure community is giving "badges." I don't want silly digital badges. I want my students to be able to find View Feedback and Show Rubric easily, without me having to create a crazy tutorial and video and remind them of where it is a hundred times. It's been seven years now. I honestly would approve of my institution choosing a new LMS when our Canvas contract expires. Their interface was good for several years ago, but they aren't making needed changes to make things easier for students. I doubt anyone even reads these comments. There has to be something better out there by now.

Do not hold your breath that this will get through to anyone at Canvas. People have been complaining about the terrible user interface that students see, how they have to know where to look and dig for both line edits and rubric comments, how the screen that they see is a tiny window inside the browser, since at least 2015. That's five years of a clumsy, hard-to-navigate page for students, five years of students thinking that their instructor did not give them feedback because the page they navigate is terrible, with no sign that Canvas is actually going to take action and change it. I'm sorry to be so pessimistic, but when I look at the forums and the posts, that is what I see. I am frustrated every term by the lengths I have to go to in order to explain to students how they can get all of their comments (view feedback and rubric).

The Canvas team should be embarrassed that this was posted FIVE YEARS AGO and nothing has changed. I have to go through absurd lengths to drill into the heads of my students where all of their comments are on their essays. The screens they see are confusing, with a tiny window containing their line edits. The screen I see is, while far from perfect, far more user-friendly. I'm typing this in Nov. 2020. It makes no sense that Canvas has known about this terrible user interface for so long and done nothing about it.

What I see in this posting is that people have been asking for this fix for five years. Many students over the years have completely missed instructor comments because the faculty member had no idea their students didn't know where they were, and no Canvas developer has addressed this yet. It is way overdue. So if this needs a question, the question would be why has the interface been so confusing for students for so long without any solution from Canvas? https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/3254-making-feedback-more-visible-to-students?commentID=169397&et=watches.email.idea_comment#comment-169397

April, I just discovered that people have been asking for an overhaul of this terrible page design for five years. Here is a link to another request on the same issue: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/3254-making-feedback-more-visible-to-students We should keep upvoting this until it gets attention. It is so confusing for my students.

This is the same thing as the comment I made in the following idea post: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/17256-utilize-speedgrader-for-peer-reviews The student interface is extremely important. Thank you for bringing this up. I hope they make these changes soon because my students are often confused and missing crucial comments.

This needs to be up-voted in a major way. I'm shocked that so few people have made this complaint so far. It's an obvious problem. The screen that I see when assessing student work is in something called the "speed grader." This view, for me, is easy to navigate and understand. Both the rubric comments and the other comments appear on the right. The two columns on the left are gone, so making highlights and annotations (though sometimes difficult because the mouse doesn't want to attach correctly to highlight a text, but that is a different topic) is easy. The annotations are both easy to create and easy to see. I have included two screen shots that show how terrible the navigation is for students. This screen is no way intuitive. Students have to know to click on the "View Feedback" link. However, even when they do, the annotation page appears floating inside that tiny window, with text so small it is difficult or impossible to see, even if the student can expand the window enough to see it. The only alternative is to somehow figure out that they can either hit the full screen icon (two arrows) or the download icon to get a pdf of the annotations. At the same time, this is only a small part of their comments, because students should be looking at BOTH their annotations and their rubric comments. However, in order to see the rubric comments, instead of already being with the other comments on the right like we see in the instructor view of the speed grader, they have to notice and click on a tiny link in the upper right. To make matters even worse, when those comments pop out, they sometimes cover up the tiny annotations window. The navigation for students to see all of their comments should be relatively intuitive. Instead, the navigation of these screens is so opaque that I often have to walk through it carefully with every student to make sure that they aren't missing my comments.
