I encountered a similar problem.
What made it worse in my case are
1) I am not trying to upload a media file. I couldn't open or download a student submission to mark it;
2) I reported the problem and got a reply through email that "Canvas Support has seen such a large increase in volume that we are no longer able to provide support for all Free For Teacher help requests." https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor/Media-is-currently-being-converted-please-try-again-in-a-little/m-p/446706#M1218
What do I do now?

It is now 2021 and I encountered this problem again.
What made it worse in my case are
1) I am not trying to upload a media file. I couldn't open or download a student submission to mark it;
2) I reported the problem and got a reply through email that "Canvas Support has seen such a large increase in volume that we are no longer able to provide support for all Free For Teacher help requests." https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor/Media-is-currently-being-converted-please-try-again-in-a-little/m-p/446706#M1218
What do I do now?

I know posts regarding this issue already exist. But the solutions were always to report a problem and wait for Canvas team to solve the individual problem. That means the problem has persisted for years (the earliest post I saw was in 2015).
I reported the problem and the reply I got through email is "Canvas Support has seen such a large increase in volume that we are no longer able to provide support for all Free For Teacher help requests" and "For assistance with any other issue, please visit the Canvas Community".
I think it is irresponsible for Canvas to discard Free For Teacher instructors in this way. If you notify me in advance, I could choose not to use Canvas. But now I had student submissions that I cannot mark, and you tell me service is no longer available, it is unfair for my students and it certainly damages the reputation of Canvas.

Hi Stefanie, Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I know the problem was resolved last week. However, it occurred again yesterday, and the day before yesterday. According to student feedback, by clicking the link and using the join code, they could sign up and access the course. But the next time they tried to log in, the email address would not be recognized and they had to do through the sign up process again. I checked and their email addresses did not show in the system, only the names.

The problem persists, so I had to create and send students a join code. But they still couldn't sign up an account. They got stuck on this page. After clicking Submit, nothing happened. Gosh, this is horrible news. I did not know if this had affected my participants or not as I am not their teacher. I am a researcher and they participate in my project. We do not communicate much. This is horrible timing for me! I would be so angry if this has an adverse impact on the outcomes of my project. Where can we report this problem?

Yes, very frustrating. I am doing a PhD and I have recruited all my participants, but I couldn't add some of them to the system. I searched and there have been no such problems or solutions. I feel I got stuck here. It's so weird that you could add some, but not others.

Dear Canvwesers, Help needed! According to this document,How do I record audio using the Rich Content Editor as a student? students can use Rich Content Editor in pages. If so, how? My experience seems to be that students can use Rich Content Editor in Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages, Quizzes, but not in pages. This is kind of inconvenient. I would like some students interactions in many of my teaching activities. They may be just a one-sentence answer to a question, or a multiple-choice question. These are not intended to be quizzes, but just teaching activities. However, it seems to me that I have to make it a quiz or assignment, not a page, in order for students to access the Rich Content Editor. Am I wrong? Any input is greatly appreciated!

I am a language teacher and I wonder if it is possible for students to do repeat-after-me exercises in Canvas? I do not mean for students to record and upload audios in quizzes and assignments. What I want is a simple class activity where they can record their speaking practice or voice their comment to a question and playback. I am currently using VoiceThread, which allows students to make audio/video comments to a video or slide. It is great. For institutional users of VoiceThread, they provide “consumer key and shared secret” to integrate VoiceThread into LMSs. But I only bought a single instructor account of VoiceThread, which means I can only embed, not integrated VoiceThread into Canvas. My students need to register and log in a separate VoiceThread account to make voice comments, which deters some of them (see screenshot attached). It would be great if this repeat-after-me activity can be achieved within Canvas, instead of relying on external apps. Anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks! Liuchun
