A student says they submitted a photo of their assignment through the Canvas Student app and got the confirmation BUT the professor never saw a submission. There is no copy of the photo in the student's user files (Account> Files > Submissions > COURSE NAME) which makes me think the submission was never made (either because it failed or it was never attempted). I tested submitting a photo to an assignment through the Canvas Student app using an iPad. I got a confirmation and I checked my user files and saw the photo. The photo did NOT save to the Camera Roll. Is it possible the photo saved elsewhere like in Internal Storage>Pictures>Canvas? Thanks for reading.

Me again ... so the Canvas admin at my husband's school very kindly opened the course participation end date to next week BUT the Moderate Quiz function is still not available. He's still in a read-only state. I can't figure out what other setting would need to be changed so he is no longer in a read-only state. Any thoughts? I looked into section dates and the start and end dates for the course sections were not updated. I read that course sections dates can override term and course dates, but that would only impact students, no? I tested in my Canvas instance by going into a course in which the term has ended, added a course section date that has already passed, and the Moderate Quiz feature is STILL available to me as an admin and as the Teacher (I masqueraded as them). Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Aye, I told him to ask them to do this in their test/beta instance. Hopefully they’ll be willing to. If not, he’s going to have to use Speedgrader to click through 40 student submissions for 18 quizzes!

OK! I think I figured it out. The difference between his school and my school is how "Teachers can access from" is set up. I went into our test instance to try something. In a Fall 2019 course with quizzes, the Moderate Quiz link is available. I edited the Fall 2019 term and changed "Teachers can access from whenever to Jan 3, 2025 12:00am" to "Teachers can access from whenever to term end (Dec 20, 2019 11:59pm)". As an admin, I am still able to see the Moderate Quiz link. When I masquerade as an instructor, I cannot see the Moderate Quiz link. Now I know what to tell my husband to ask his Canvas admin to do so he can see this information! Thanks to @chriscas and @Chris_Hofer for chiming in. I appreciate you two taking the time.

Hi @Chris_Hofer , thanks for the reply. And thank you! As an admin, I know those features can be enabled. I have no idea why his school has purposely decided to not allow them, though. Seems silly to not allow instructors to create a sandbox course in which to build assignments or quizzes in a safe place. His institution has both Classic and New Quizzes enabled. The quizzes in which he'd like to see how long it took for a student to complete are classic quizzes. Cheers, Helen

I'm puzzled - thanks in advance for reading. I am a Canvas admin at my institution. My husband is a professor at another institution so I can see the difference in their instance vs. ours. For example, for whatever reason, at his school, he cannot create a new Canvas course. He also doesn't have access to fill out his profile. Anyway, he would like to be able to see how much time each student spent on a quiz, information that is available on the Moderate Quiz page. BUT Moderate Quiz isn't an option for him and I can't figure out why. The class in which he's like to see how much time each student spent on a quiz has ended, but I don't think that's the issue - I checked my own instance and even for courses in which the term or course date has ended, Moderate Quiz is still an option for me as an admin and for the instructor (if I masquerade as them). What am I missing? Any ideas? Thanks again for reading.

When you ask Canvas to drop the lowest score from an assignment/quiz in an assignment group, if there are two or more lowest scores (i.e. there are 6 quizzes, and on 2 quizzes, the student scored 0 points), which is dropped? The one that was completed the latest? Thanks! Cheers, Helen

Hi! I'm creating up a standalone course for program assessment that is organized by modules -- each module is a different institutional learning outcome (set up at the account level) -- with signature assignments -- used to collect evidence for the aforementioned outcomes. Each signature assignment has a rubric attached that contains the relevant institutional learning outcomes. The Director of Assessment would like for there to be 2 graders who use the rubric to assess the artifact. I've enabled moderated grading for these signature assessments, but I'm unsure about a few things. 1) The assignment doesn't need to have any points, does it? There are no "real" students in this course. I'll use dummy accounts to submit artifacts (that have been collected from real students) to these assignments. But will moderated grading still work? Do I need to have both graders enter in some arbitrary score so that the rubric scoring will be applied? 2) Will the outcome report (at the Admin level) be populated with data once the moderator selects the final grade and releases grades or as soon as a grader starts clicking on rubric criteria? I can't figure it out. Thanks for your time. I am grateful for any thoughts you may have!

@Chris_Hofer, thanks so much for the reply and for sharing! I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question. We are new to trying to do program assessment in Canvas, so I'm trying to figure out what options we have. What you've described sounds like a common set up -- having professors import account-level (institutional) outcomes into their individual courses, adding relevant outcomes to a rubric, then adding a rubric to an assignment -- but I've been trying to set up a separate, stand-alone course for program assessment. No students will be enrolled in the course, so I'm adding "fake" accounts (so I can masquerade and submit collected artifacts to assignments) and those with the Teacher role would be members of the assessment committee, who would be doing the evaluating of artifacts. I'm not sure if I need a fake account for EVERY artifact or if I can use one fake student to submit to multiple assignments that have different rubrics, or if that would be problematic for reporting. Anyway, thank you again!

Howdy! Just wondering about other higher ed institutions that are using Canvas for program assessment (but not the Program Assessment tool in Portfolium). I've found some helpful resources like https://www.k-state.edu/assessment/training/canvas/programlevelassessment.html and https://kb.iu.edu/d/awaw so I *think* I understand the process of how to set it up, but would love to hear from real people who are actively using Canvas for this purpose. Comments from Instructure As part of the new Ideas & Themes process, all ideas in Idea Conversations were reviewed by the Product Team. Any Idea that was associated with an identified theme was moved to the new Idea & Themes space. Any Idea that was not part of the move is being marked as Archived. This will preserve the history of the conversations while also letting Community members know that Instructure will not explore the request at this time.
