Hi Ellen, I'm sure others will be able to expand on this, but my short answer is that learning outcomes describe what the students will be able to do or understand after learning the related material. So if your objective is to have students understand the process of making bricks, the outcome (based on your list) would be that they can use what they learned in a real-life situation (e.g., "Students will correctly identify the procedures for making bricks). I haven't used the Mastery Learning yet, but maybe someone else can help you with specifics. Leslie

I'd like to hear what you mean by "microassignments." It sounds like they're low-stakes quizzes, but you point this out in the context of using the quiz tool for more than just quizzes. Can you give examples? Thanks!

Regrettably, Canvas will not allow us to use Pass/Fail. It requires points for everything. So no matter how much we try to get students to think about mastering the material or meeting criteria, etc., Canvas maintains the outdated fixation on points. I work around this in my courses by using an arbitrary number for "pass," and continually remind students that the number doesn't matter. As for having the quiz be a requirement to move on, I would also like to implement this in my courses, so I'm very interested in the response.

Perfect! But when I download the grades, the checkmarks show up as zeros, as you can see in the image. Obviously, this is no good! Can anyone help me resolve this?

I would love this feature in Canvas. My current grading system is "specfications grading," known by other names, too, whereby students don't earn points but complete (or do not complete) requirements. However, I currently include quizzes, which Canvas insists on grading by points and percentages. So a student in my class who has passed 9/10 quizzes but not completed any other requirements sees their grade in Canvas as 90% and feels great, while the quizzes are only one component and s/he may in fact not be passing the course. This has been very confusing for students and frustrating for me. It would be great if we could control this.

I assigned a graded discussion as an assignment. Students post and respond to another students' post. I can see their posts and responses on my end, and I'm now in the process of grading. But students are panicking because Canvas is showing "Missing" on their grades. I pasted in a shot of what they are seeing, using the Test Student's record as an example. I assume this has to do with how I set up the assignment, and I'd like to know what I need to change next time. Any ideas would be helpful!

I've been working for several hours trying to get Canvas to not show points. I've searched the old Q&A, and I see the issue of specifications grading came up in 2016 and again in 2018. I know I can create grading schemes that work on Pass/Fail. But they still show students points. Getting away from points grading is the whole point (ha!) of specs grading. D2L allowed it, but alas, my institution has switched to Canvas. This is one of several issues I'm having, and the most serious drawback in my view. Going back to points represents a big backwards step, pedagogically speaking. Have the Canvas creators paid this any attention recently? If not, maybe someone should create a specs grading app.
