I agree, especially as we don’t use Mastery Paths as it would cause issues with syncing to our SIS. A simple solution would be what is possible in Google Forms, if a student gets a question correct, advance them to question #X if they get the question wrong, advance them to question #Y. Though Google Forms does become a bit tricky in double checking all of your progressions, and if you make an addition in the middle, you have to redo most of your progressions. Having an actual flowchart to see all the branches of paths would be awesome, but obviously more complex to code.

Problem statement: Unanswered essay questions (from students either skipping them or running out of time) requiring manual grading. With >150 students, I many times have instances where I am just putting in 0s for each unanswered essay question in Quiz. Yes please. I use item banks to make multiple versions of a single question (different values for a math problem for instance), and am annoyed that outcomes can’t be aligned to the bank as a whole. A related issue is having an option for the quiz analysis to be averaged for an item bank.

This year our district has made our weighted categories for us. For instance: Formatives: 60% Summatives: 40% Previously I would weight different types of assignments differently. For instance, notebook checks for 10%. Is there is a way for me to state that notebook check assignments should make up 10% of the 60% that all formatives are worth? If not, it seems I am now forced to be point-based and have to plan out every single assignment I will give and play around with that.

In the grade sync page, you can see the status and if any assignments had errors and didn’t transfer correctly. I always check a few random students to make sure the grades match, and double check all of them for report cards (just have 2 windows open side-by-side).

Not that I know of for a grade. There are module requirements where an assignment is counted as complete if they open/view the assignment, but that doesn’t translate to a grade.

The point total on the assignment settings is how much the assignment is worth. The points on the quiz side is different. If you make your assignment worth 40pt and the quiz questions total 20pt, then if a student gets a 15/20 then they’ll get 30/40 points in the gradebook. I like to not have students confused, so my question points match my assignment points.

I’m still trying to grasp the scenario. Are you saying you have instances where you have your category weights to have say summative exams worth 30% of the overall grade and inside that category you place the end of course final examination and you want it to be 20% of the overall grade, meaning every other summative exam summed together must only total 10% and their individual weights summing to 10% also get re-calculated? Or, in other words, you don’t want point-based assignments in weighted categories, you instead want weighted assignments where the categories are just tags? I guess I can see that, it is just not how I grade. For instance, I have a HW+Classwork category worth 40% of the gradebook grade, and every single HW I assign is worth 100pt, and every single notebook check is worth 25pt. I do not worry what % of their total grade each notebook check is worth. However, I could see the benefit if I wanted to give a final exam and that if I wanted it to be worth say 20% of their semester grade, that unless I made that it’s own category worth 40% in the Q4 gradebook, that it indeed would take some calculations to figure out the point value if I placed it in my Test category that’s worth 35% of the grade. I do not see how that effectively works though, as you would have to know the weights for every assignment beforehand to prevent severe gradebook recalculation (e.g., I set each notebook check to be worth 2% of the total grade, but then realize that I assigned more than anticipated and so I have to readjust them so that each is worth only 1% of the total grade).

I’m not understanding the complaint of having to manually calculated the adjusted scores if each assignment is worth the same. In a discussion assignment or similar, just make them the same points. In New Quizzes, the assignment score and the question scores are different. I keep everything 100pt, but if you made a New Quiz that was 50pt for the assignment and the questions totaled 10pt, then if a student scored a 50% (5/10) then they will get 25pt for the assignment. I only understand your complaint if talking retroactively.

I simply add a “Select True” T/F question at the end, and they get 50% for that. If you make assignments add up to 100pts, then it’s easy and just make this question worth 50pt. If you don’t make it add up to 100pts, then simply make this question worth whatever the current question point total is (but remember the question point totals and the assignment’s point worth are not the same).

Yes please. I've also once ran into an issue where I forgot to lock a previous marking period's assignments and a student did them after the fact, which was very tedious to correct.

Our school is not 1:1 and students use their own phones at school, and some parents enable parental controls which severely limit what websites their child can access and sometimes the Quizzes.Next domain gets caught. It would be great if the new quizzes could actually be loaded natively in the student app rather than loading it via a browser pop-up. Many students at the beginning also get very confused by the “Launch External Tool” wording instead of just “Begin Assignment” or whathaveyou (having the name “quizzes” also is confusing to students, as teachers give HW quizzes, quiz quizzes, test quizzes, etc.).

Unicode characters work. So you can do a superscripts & subscripts by searching on Google and copy/paste. For instance, Google "subscript 3 unicode" and you will find ₃. If you need >1 digit, just copy/paste each place value, such as 10₃₅₂. Obviously though, being able to do it natively is preferable, so as a math teacher I also hope Canvas is able to resolve this.

I’ve used that before, but for math it’s really only useful if the student is using a touchscreen (using a mouse/trackpad to draw out math is very tedious).

Whenever I have a document I want to “give” to others, I make it in Google Docs and share it as forced copy. In the share link instead of /edit change it /copy. The students will need access to a Gmail account though.

11:59pm due date likely means 59min & 0sec. If you uploaded it even 1sec past, it could be marked as late. Midnight due-dates are best to have, but I personally use 11:59pm as too many students confused 12:00am as being Noon.

BigBlueButton has a Whiteboard feature. However, unless you have a pen tablet or something, I would advise against it. Drawing out math problems via a trackpad/mouse is not fun. I personally use an iPad (our school has units I borrowed last year, but I bought one for myself this year, plus an Apple Pencil) and the built-in screen record feature (just make sure the microphone is turn on each time, sometimes it resets, so your whole video has no audio!). You can use apps like Notability, or you can use the built-in MarkUp feature either in the Notes app or via a blank PDF page saved in Files. I give my students self-created handouts to take notes with, and so I save that into my Files on the iPad and use MarkUp on that; this is how I teach as well, ScreenMirror to the projector (no more cleaning whiteboards!). You can upload it as a video file to Canvas, put I personally upload it unlisted to YouTube and then embed/link it to the related assignments (I used to just have it as a list on a page, but the kids didn't watch them, embedding the video (so a video player box is visible) into the description of the HW assignments really increased viewership).
