Thanks so much!
I will reach out to those who have access to our server files and see if they will add this.
Note: I tried it locally on my computer (I have set up a dupe locally since I don't have access to the Admin server...) and it worked great!
Thanks so much again!
Jamie 🙂

Hello all you genius helpers!
Time-sensitive question:
A "new" icon/link for downloading embedded documents from a Canvas Page is suddenly appearing, and I am looking urgently to discover a way to disable or eliminate this item. We have copyright protected content we want students to view, but not download. (yes: they can find other more labor0inensive ways of copying content, but we don't want to make it quite so easy).
This is the icon/link I'd like very much to make go away:
We had come up with a way to hid download links and set an auto-open preview setting in HTML, but this is not working for this new icon and I can't get any info from Instructure on the source of this new "feature". Is it on their server? is there a setting in Admin we can control? No answers from instructure as of yet...
Many thanks in advance for help!
J

Hello! Is there a solution to removing this new download icon/link:
That doesn't involve the hassle of uploading to Google docs and creating an embed that way, or convincing our Admin to add the JScript above?
We were happily using some HTML code with ScribID but for some unfathomable reason, Instructure added this new download icon that seems to make it past CSS and HTML work-arounds.
Many thanks!

Hello!
These solutions didn't work for me.
I have a PDF that is NOT password protected. The PDF has internal links so the instructor can "jump about" the PDF from a certain page to another specific page.
I have tried disabling the preview as recommended but still the links do not activate. The little hand cursor comes up as I roll over the link, like a link is recognized, but when you click on the link it does not go anywhere. The links of course work fine locally (viewing the document on my computer from within Acrobat).
For fun, I also tried to view the PDF in the viewing in Files to see if the links work, and also as a file brought into the module without being embedded in the page. None work.
Could it be a setting in the PDF itself that canvas needs in order to allow the links to be active if it is embedded in a page?
Any other suggestions are welcome!
Many thanks!

Hello there!
I am not certain if this is what you want, but I read your question to ask if you can have a PDF (or other embedded file) auto-load in a page without a link?
If this is the case, I am using some HTML to do so. Here's the string:
<p style="font-size: 0px;"> <a class="auto_open instructure_file_link instructure_scribd_file"></a> </p>
Copy the HTML in red above over the HTML between the red brackets in the screen shot below (the default string Canvas brings in when you embed a file through the course link):
So it ends up looking like this:
As the HTML shows, you are basically setting the link font size to "0", making it invisible. In order for the file to open (since there isn't a link anymore, or it's invisible) you see the auto-open feature.
As above, you can use this for a PDF or a PowerPoint.
Hope this helps!
Jamie 🙂

Thanks for the update!
I'm starting to wonder about development priorities with Instructure and issue like this, and other conventions we should be expecting from a normal software application, cloud-based or not.
24 Hours...*sigh*

I have the same problem. I support several Instructors as an ID. So far, no joy on any of work arounds (in some cases, I think the work-arounds take so much time the problem ":solves" itself).
I think this definitely deserves a ticket if someone hasn't already done so.
My Instructors have had to wait up to 24 hours for a new Assignment, Discussion or quiz to show up on the list. That seems "unacceptable" to me. 🙂
Grateful for this forum and the Community! Otherwise, I'd think it was me 🙂

Hello Philip! As I mentioned above, I was part of an implementation of WalkMe with a rather archaic and complicated CRM, which used iFrames extensively! In fact, the ability of WalkMe to handle iFrames and popups was part of my POC requirements during the initial negotiation process. They were able to meet that demand. I am curious what WalkMe had to say about that iFrame issue you experienced? They were great about developing a solution for us at that time. Note: as I mentioned above also due to the platform's clumsy programming, we did have to use jQuery often. Looking forward to hearing what they said 🙂 I am very hopeful for a solid implementation of WalkMe with Canvas some day. There are certainly areas where WalkMe could add high value! Jamie

Hello! I am happy to hear a discussion about using WalkMe with Canvas! I was told by a Canvas Admin there were issues implementing WalkMe and I am happy it sounds like these have been resolved. I am hopeful the Canvas groups I support now would be interested in trying WalkMe out! I am Certified in WalkMe advanced implementation with experience implementing and building WalkMe for a completely different type of platform (CRM). This implementation was a more advanced effort requiring the use of jQuery solutions often. I would definitely rate the customer support for this effort as excellent. WalkMe really stepped up to the plate with any issues we had and was invested in our successful deployment. If you have any questions about this feel free to post them 🙂 (And no, I don't work for WalkMe! hahaha...) Thanks for the post! Jamie 🙂

Thanks so much for this note Kyle! I posted my reply and difficulty before seeing this and - behold! Waiting overnight produced both the gear/sprocket for quality and the high-resolution video I had uploaded (but wasn't playing). Note to Instructure: Maybe...put a note somewhere for others that there will be a delay in processing video uploads and to note that they should check back after 12, 24 hours for full-quality presentation. Just a suggestion 🙂 Jamie 🙂

Hello! so far this solution has not been successful for me. I am very experienced in video production in a number of tools and have generated the files in question in Camtasia with a few different settings based on the advice here to see what works. No standard formatting has made the videos less "lossy". Any alternate suggestions? The videos themselves in ANY other play than Canvas are gorgeous. It is their playback in Canvas that is the problem. VERY frustrating and very surprised Canvas is not resolving this. Thankyou!

Hi! Thanks so much for this! Question: I noticed in both these examples I have to click the "x" to close the pop-up window TWICE: two windows come u, one with the text information, and a second behind it with no info, but I have to click the "x" to close that window too. Any advice on why this is happening an dhow to get rid of it? Thanks!
