Because documentation is such an important concept in education, wouldn't it be useful if Canvas would allow for message threads to be printed out? Currently, at least from what I can find, a user has to open each message, copy and paste it into an external file, such as a Word document, and print it out or save it. Maybe the engineers could work on creating printable, threaded messaging?

How about setting it up so that a user can repeat an assignment? For example, we here in Texas have to document attendance in our online courses, and many use a daily checkin in Canvas. It would be soooo convenient if you could set up a recurrence for such a simple assignment and not have to recreate it for each day.

Just commenting in hopes of bumping this back up into the consciousness of the decision-makers at Canvas. You really, really should be able to tag assignments with standards without creating a rubric. Really.

I am looking for tips for how to setup campus administrators so that they can view classes, individual students, create and share content, etc. For example, what is the best way for a counselor to create a "Counselor Corner" course that can be shared with all students? Our students are rostered into courses automatically, but this won't work for the counselor, principal, etc. I have created a sort of campus admin role with more rights than an observer, so I think principals can see all classes/students. Sharing with all is another story, and I'm open to suggestions.

I have some folks concerned because after a district template has been updated and subsequently updated on Commons, downloading the template update erased teacher-created content (not much there at this point, thankfully). Is there a setting or a checkmark I need to tick to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Silence is golden! 😄 So, after digging around on Twitter and in a SIG to which I belong, here is our plan; All subs will be required to complete a district, asynchronous Canvas course housed in Canvas. F2f, day-to-day subs will have no access to Canvas classes. Any content, assignments, etc. should already be set by the teacher. Long-term subs will be added as TAs in the courses for which they are subbing. This will allow for grading, planning, etc. Access will be removed as soon as the assignment ends.

I am in the middle of a new implementation and need some advice, please. How does your district handle substitute teacher access for Canvas? Long-term subs seem easy enough, as I can add them as a TA to a course to give them limited access, grade assignments, etc. What about those single-day, short term folks, though? Any access? No access? Also, is there a super simplified guide or training course that would be appropriate for the specific needs of a substitute. Thank you for any help you might offer!

Your understanding is correct. I think it would be very helpful to include a field allowing a role to be designated without having to assign them to a course. At this point, I have a generic, empty course, and I go in and add them as a teacher after creating their accounts. This isn't a course they will even be interacting with, just one to make them have the role. It adds an extra step that I feel could be eliminated.

We still aren't eye-to-eye, Stefanie. I really hate trying to do this in a forum like this. I don't want to manually create a course and add users in specific roles--that already exists. I want to manually create a new user and give them the teacher role, as if I had uploaded them with a csv file.

Hi, Stefanie, So, in the CSV upload for Enrollments, there is the option to set the Role. We did so and selected Teacher--worked like a charm. Teachers could login and create practice courses and kick the tires a bit. New users, added individually, though--you have to add them to some mock course as a teacher to establish that role. I simply think Canvas should include a drop-down with teacher, ta, student, observer to the manual account creation tool.

I might be mistaken. However, when we upload, teachers have teacher role by either assignment or default. They can immediately access Commons, create new courses, etc. When we manually create them, they are students by default, meaning these features are unavailable until we go in and assign them as teachers to a course to give them teacher rights and access. It would be VERY helpful to just be able to select this when creating the account instead of going through the additional step.

Canvas allows schools to designate account types (student, teacher, observer, etc.) when uploaded bulk accounts. However, there is no such ability when you have to add one individually. You have to add a teacher as a teacher to an existing course, for instance, to make them a teacher. This is really silly, and a simple dropdown should be included to let you designate the account type as it is created.

Hi, Stefanie, Thank you, but that is actually not what I was asking about. When an account is created by upload, you can designate their role as Teacher, student, observer, TA, or designer. This is not dependent upon being assigned to any course. After speaking to tech support, it appears that the only solution is to create a new upload and overwrite the incorrect type.
