I created a banner that was 1300 pixels wide but it still did not cover the entire width of the page when observing in Chrome using "Student View". Most of you have suggested smaller sizes, so I'm starting to think that how canvas displays things in a browser will also depend on our respective screen resolutions... which of course means taking the time and effort to create a banner of just the right size is pointless as every student will see it differently depending on what screen they're using.

I second what b_w_reid said. I posted something similar just over a year ago in the Questions section. It would be a very useful features because sometimes we assign things only to specific students (e.g. a make-up test) and, as it is, we can't check to see if everything is in order.

I had exported grades at least two times before. At the time when I noticed this problem, I had no other exports in progress and hadn't exported grades in days. Previous exports had long since been completed.

They were assigned actual grades. But the following day, the gradebook exported just fine. I guess it took 24h for the system to realise that grades had been entered. This is somewhat disconcerting. If anything, this is a reminder to always keep a personal record of grades that were entered and NEVER trust Canvas to do anything properly.

I graded an assignment I posted the grades There was a late assignment. I graded that tone too. All the grades became hidden, sending students into a panic. This is ridiculous. Posting and hiding grades has been a nightmare for so many people for years. Why can't it be just one single button instead of who-knows-how-many different setting each one buried deeper than the next. I mean, if Canvas designed a phone, would it be able to make phone calls? Or would I have to adjust six different settings first?

I have recently graded an assignment using Speedgrader. As usual, the grades appear in the gradebook when I look at it in my browser. However, when I export the gradebook as a .csv file, the column for that assignment is blank. Other previously graded assignments appear normally. Only the grades for the latest assignment are missing. Additional info: The grades for the assignment in question are hidden from students, but this hasn't caused the grades to go missing from the exported file before. It has been half an hour since I graded the last of the assignments and probably over two hours since I entered the first grade. None of them appear on the exported file. I don't recall ever noticing that the system takes hours to "update" after grades are entered or modified. The assignment in question was only assigned to some students (it was a make-up exam for students who missed the original exam due to medical reasons). Could this be causing the odd behaviour?

I would like to see what my course looks like from the point of view of a specific student. Is this possible? I'd like to do this because there are some items that are only meant for specific students (e.g. a make-up test for students who missed the test for a valid reason) and I want to verify that everything is in order. As it is, I have no way seeing whether the assignment I have created is working as it should because it is only assigned to specific students.

I see that this thread was started in 2015. I'm writing this in late 2020. How has this still not been developed? Honestly, this should be a basic functionality. It's pretty astounding that it isn't.

Wow, that's pretty buried! Thanks for pointing me to it. I never explored the "individual view" before. But it also only shows the minimum and maximum. I was hoping for something like the frequency bar graph you see when you curve grades, like so: Except I don't want to see what it would look like if I were to curve it. I want to know what it looks like as is. Maybe this isn't possible. But since I saw those mentions of "grade distribution", I thought it might be. I guess I'll just have to keep exporting to Excel.

Hi chofer, yes the average is clearly shown in speed grader, but I'm talking about the distribution. The Canvas instructors' manual explains how to show or hide the distribution to students here: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-hide-grade-distribution-scoring-details-from-students/ta-p/674 However, it doesn't explain whether instructors can see this distribution. Another page from UPenn (https://infocanvas.upenn.edu/2020/04/17/canvas-grade-display-features-hiding-grade-distribution-graphs-and-totals-in-students-grade-summaries/) claims that the distribution is visible to instructors, but doesn't say where. It's pretty funny. They even acknowledge that "many instructors may not even be aware of it", but then still don't explain it. It's like everybody's going out of their way to keep us in the dark.

Is it possible to view the grade distribution for an assignment? The instructor's manual only gives instructions on how to enable or hide this feature for students. I want to know if we can see the grade distribution as instructors and, if so, how/where. I realise I can export the gradebook into Excel and do the calculation myself, but since Canvas says it can show the distribution to students, I figured it could just as easily show it to instructors and save me the trouble of playing with Excel.

I want to create an assignment where students can answer questions directly in a text box. When I create an online assignment, under "Online Entry Options", I see a box that says "Text Entry". However, selecting that doesn't seem to do anything at all. There is no way to create questions for students to answer. It seems that the only way to do this is to create a "Quiz", not an "Assignment". However, I also want to be able to award an overall holistic grade for the quiz, like you can do for assignments. Unfortunately, the quizzes force you to assign a weight to each question. This is for simple weekly assignments where students have to answer a few basic questions about the assigned readings. I want the whole exercise to be worth 1 point (it's essentially a free participation point in my class). But if I make a quiz with three questions about that week's reading, I have to assign a value to each question, which automatically makes my quiz worth 3 points. If next week's quiz has four questions, it will be worth four points. Not only will these weekly assignments be unequally weighted, they will, together, count for way more of the final grade than I want them to. The only solution seems to be to create a pdf fillable form that students can download, fill out, and then upload so I can grade them on speedgrader... but in that case I might as well not use Canvas at all.

Thanks for your reply Allie, I figured out eventually what the problem was, and it was the result of a strange coincidence of errors: The posting policy wasn't set to manual after all. Not sure how this happened since I knew to do that and remember doing it when I set up the assignments a week before this happened. Perhaps my changes in the settings weren't properly registered due to a connectivity issue or something of that sort. Either that, or Canvas has grown sentient and wants to mess with me! So if it wasn't set to "manual", why were most students' grades hidden anyway? In the quiz, I gave students an option to skip one question of their choosing. As I graded, I simply skipped those questions as well. As one question per assignment was not graded, Canvas considered the grading as incomplete and did not post the tally in the Grades module. So why was the grade posted for one student only? Because they did not read the instructions properly and answered all questions. I did not realise this and went ahead and graded all questions as well. So for this one single student, Canvas considered the grading complete and posted the tally in Grades. In the end, I had to go back to every quiz and manually enter a grade of 0 for the skipped question. Only then did Canvas post the grades. I know I can hide grades after the fact, but the student had already seen the grade. I would not have known about the error had the student not written to me about their grade. In any case, it's all been sorted now. However, I am still concerned about the manual setting not registering or getting reversed after the fact. I guess I'll have to double and triple-check in the future.

My grade posting policy was set to manual. Grades were hidden. The moderation process was enabled. I did this while grading and wanted to release grades at the same time when all was done. Lo and behold, a single student grade was posted anyway. A single one. How? Why? Who knows! Hopefully someone on here has suggestions. I'm sure I must have double clicked on something or other instead of single clicking - or something equally ridiculous - but the very fact that I could do it without realising it is indicative of very poor software design. And now I can't figure out how to undo it despite digging through these fora for hours. Another sign of poor design. Well, I guess this student will just have their grade a week before anyone else!

This is ridiculously counter-intuitive. The "hide grades" option in the menu should do what it says - hide grades. You have no idea how much trouble this has caused me this semester.
