Optional test and submission of e-grades for large classes

I have a class of 180+ students. I have three mandatory tests and one optional, all equally weighted. For students who don't take the optional test, their grades for that test show "-"; for those who take the test the grades are their actual grades. The total column in the gradebook displays correct grades for all students. However, when I attempt to e-submit the grades using the gradebook total column, the grades change in that any "-" is treated as zero. For example, a student with grades 100, 100, 100, "-" (optional test), has a 75% total whereas he should have a 100% total. There is no current grade column option in the e-submission system.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
