Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for examples of how I might include academic integrity statements or honor code pledges within online exams. Do you do anything related to this that you would be willing to share? I'm not sure if it would be better to include something within the directions of the assessment or as an actual question that students need to acknowledge by answering. I would assume, if it's incorporated as a question, I would need to assign a point value to that question, correct?
Thank you for anything you are willing to share. I learn so much from this community and I am very grateful for it.
Michelle
Hi Michelle,
I don't have any stock language that is used, but I do like the idea of having it be a question rather than just including in the directions. They are more likely to actually read it as a question; and you can make them act on and acknowledge it. So my suggestion is to have the first question (assigned 0 points if you wish) be true or false with something like "The work on this exam is my own and I pledge to not use any outside sources or people to help me. By clicking True I pledge that I will not cheat".
The reason I'm suggesting True/False is that Canvas will grade it for you. I know one person who made it an Essay asking students to enter their name as signature attesting to not cheating. Good idea, but when it came to grading there was no score in the gradebook until the instructor when through Speedgrader and entered a point value for all of the submissions.

Thank you for responding, Rick. This is very helpful!
Hi @everson_50 ,
For all of my courses I have an Academic Honesty question in an orientation quiz. Students must complete this quiz before they begin the course and includes other questions such having the required software installed, having had read my syllabus, being aware of my late work policies, etc. Pasted below is my question that could easily be adapted to place in each quiz. I have made it a multiple choice question with just one answer of "I agree that the work completed and submitted for this course, in both Canvas and MindTap, will be my own work completed solely by me." I don't see the point of given them two choices. If they can't agree to that, what's the point of continuing on? 🙂
Academic Honesty Agreement.
All assignments you complete or submit for this course using your account login credentials are expected to be your own work completed individually unless the assignment clearly states otherwise. Any instances of cheating or plagiarism will result in a zero for that assignment and the student will be referred to the academic dean for disciplinary action subject to the Acts of Dishonesty section of SVCC’s Student Code of Conduct.
Examples of cheating and plagiarism may include online work completed by someone else under your login credentials, sharing assignment documents or start files, completing assessments together, searching the web for answers during an assessment, or sharing images of quizzes and exams.
Hi @gnoack,
I love this idea! Thank you so much for sharing. Our first assignment is a syllabus quiz/course website scavenger hunt, and I will definitely incorporate a question like this into future versions of the assignment.
Dear all, In this manual I've set this up for the lecturers at my university as described below. Good luck & kind regards, Nico
"Policy requires students to agree with an integrity statement before they start with an examination. It's possible to block access to the exam for students, who don't agree with the statement. To organize this, the integrity statement and the examination itself need to be in separate modules at Canvas Modules. Imagine that at Canvas Modules you've created a module called Examination, and in that module you've added a quiz called Final Exam. For the integrity statement you create another module called Integrity statement, and for this exam you add a quiz to that module called Integrity statement Final exam. Only one question needs to be added to that quiz, which informs whether the student agrees with that integrity statement or not. Make sure that you assign 'no' as the false answer, and 'yes' as the correct answer, and that students can earn one point by answering that question 'correctly'. The next step is to set earning one point for that question as a requirement. You can do that by following this manual, and specify that the score for this question needs to be at least one point. After adding the quiz Integrity statement Final exam to the module Integrity statement, you can find the Requirements option at the Edit option of the Settings of the module. The last step is to set a prerequisite for the module Integrity statement Final exam by following this manual. Make sure that you've positioned the module Integrity statement above the module Examination, as Canvas only considers modules as possible prerequisites, in case they are positioned above the one you're adding a prerequisite to. You can find the Prerequisites option at the Edit option of the Settings of the module. After having set the module Integrity statement as a prerequisite for the module Examination, students only have access to the module Examination in case they've answered ‘yes’ to the quiz Integrity statement Final exam."
Thanks for the cool manual. I don't think you touched on the subject of academic integrity and fairness. It seems to me that distance education does not violate these rules. The main mechanism of influence is content on the Internet and educational manipulations.
I agree, I also think that this topic is sooo relevant.
