I am a subject coordinator. I wish to administer a mid-semester take-home examination with the following 3 properties: (1) the students will have an 8-hour window in which to access the exam; (2) once they have accessed it, each will have 3 hours to complete the exam; (3) the students will then submit their answers in the form of a pdf via canvas by the end of their 3-hour periods. Can I do this through Canvas?

Hi @steven_william1 Welcome to the Canvas Community. I see that you joined us back in January, but this seems to be your first question here. The answer is YES; you can do this on all three counts. I do not know if you are using Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes, but the answer is yes on both. (If you are unsure which one you are using, see the first bullet under the section below on New Quizzes; if you cannot crate a quiz the way outlined there, then it means you are using Classic Quizzes via the Quizzes menu link in Canvas, and then +Quiz.)
If using Classic Quizzes, check here:
- How do I make a quiz available before or after the due date? for setting the availability dates/times window for your 8-hour window.
- What options can I set in a quiz? which includes showing how to set your time limit of 3 hours.
- How do I create a File Upload quiz question? for information on how to create the type of question where a student must upload a PDF file, to use your example.
If using New Quizzes, check here:
- How do I create an assessment using New Quizzes? (Also check this one to see if you are using New Quizzes, to begin with, if you're not sure.)
- How do I manage settings for an assessment in New Quizzes? for setting the time limit of 3 hours
- https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26340-how-do-i-create-a-file-upload-assessment-question-usi...for information on the file upload you want to do.
I hope this information helps, Steven!
