[ARCHIVED] Any one using Visibility = Institution

Hi

We are looking at setting up a large number of our canvas courses so that students and faculty can browse courses. Our research into using the Visibility = Institution on all of these courses looks promising. Is anyone else doing this? What pitfalls should we be looking out for?

Hi Justin Horvath,

Well, yes I think the Institution visibility will do what you want, but you'll probably also want to include the courses on the public course index or will there be some place else where you list them?

My sub-org has a separate website where we list our open enrollment courses which is still behind a login screen so authorized users can get access. And we have those courses listed as visibility: Institution for that purpose, so that folks need to have an account on our Canvas to see the courses.

If you've got admin access, you may want to check the visibility of the courses on Tufts' public course index now. I counted over 60 courses on your index. (I stopped counting at 60.)

Thanks for your thoughts. One thing we are struggling with is that, while we want most contnet to be visible to nonenrolled students, there are some things (like answer keys with feedback from an exam) that we do not want public. We are thinking about using the requirements or prerequisites on modules to hide them from nonenrolled students. Have you thought about/ solved this issue at your school?

Hi Justin,

As our community friend  @kmeeusen ‌ usually suggests narrow down the choices in the Course Navigation menu and remove the Files from visibility and any other areas that are not used or will be distracting.

Usually we have Announcements, Modules, Discussions at a minimum for most courses. We have sample courses in our Public Course Index (with public visibility) and for those I just have Modules and Syllabus available in course Navigation. These sample courses are less than 20 pages of a full course with the Discussions converted into regular pages so the prompts are visible to those not enrolled in the course.
