[ARCHIVED] Assign an assignment to a sub-set of users or to a Section

Hello,

I can see a variation of this question has been asked a lot, but I still can't get this to work. How do you allocate an assignment for a sub-set of users. Note not a Group assignment, but assign to a Group.

This video indicates this is possible: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/CanvasLive/GROUPIES-Assignments-for-Groups/ba-p/382821 but under "Assign" the Group I create doesn't appear.

I can get a section to appear, following the guide here: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-assign-an-assignment-to-a-course-sectio... this works in a way, it takes the assignment out of the "to do" list for students not added to the section but they can still see the assignment and submit to it.

Also, in the final screen shot its possible to see the Sections the assignment applies to, this doesn't happen when I try this.

What am I doing wrong? Is there no way to allocate an assignment to a subset of students and not allow anyone else to see or at least not take part?

I can't tell from all the screenshots if you are doing it completely correct.  Plus I am not 100% sure if I understand your setup.  You are looking at the correct documentation to do what you want.  I am assuming that this assignment is a separate assignment that is to be sent to your retakes section - the first assignment is assignment 1 given to everyone and the retake assignment is assignment 2 given to students in retake.

In any case, you should be able to assign an assignment to a specific set of students where the others cannot/will not see it.

My question is with the retakes section shot - My guess is that section has all the students in it that you want to retake/redo the assignment.

When you are making the assignment first click on the X next to everyone so that no one is set to take the assignment, then click on the retakes section from the list.  Everything else is done time wise as you show.  (you may have done these steps, but I cannot tell based on the screen shot that just shows the retakes section).  when you save a dialog box should come up asking about the missing people not assigned to the assignment - do not assign them by selecting the continue response to the question to not assign to the missing people.  In regards to the above, your first pictures shows section B and A and everyone else for the assignment - that is what you see when there are multiple groups of students/sections with different dates and times for the assignment.

The attached pictures show the process and then the last one shows the assignment view for ecestudent2 which is in the same class as ecestudent1,  Student1 gets the assignment, student 2 does not.

Please reply back if I misunderstood your issue.

Thank you so much for you detailed reply. Its good to know as following your process is exactly how I did this using a Retake Section, with select students added to it. It does work to a degree in that the Retake Assignment is taken out of students outside of the Retake groups "To do" list but they can still access and see the assignment? However, maybe that is how I am testing this, not with real students!

Thanks for pointing out the A/B Sections for the example. This makes sense but it would be good if this indication came up regardless of how many Sections "Groups" this was applied to i.e. "This assignment is only available to Students in the Retake Section". 

I think I'm going to have to have a play, at the moment I'm using test and staff accounts in TEST, so maybe that is the reason it isn't working exactly as expected. But it is halfway there.

I think you are correct in that you may not be seeing a true indication of what happens due to testing environment.

In my example I was in a class where I have added my two dummy student accounts.  I assigned an assignment to one of them only.  That student sees both assignments - the original and the retake.  They are excused from the original so that only the retake score is used.  The second student does not see the retake assignment - the view for that student is taken from the assignment navigation link.  That information is also in one of the documents for having differentiated assignments and what happens

I see in my writing this up that others have responded.  My original post was made before I logged in and it went away.

@dm200400600 I am pretty positive that you are seeing the results you are seeing because you are using Test and fake students.  If an assignment is not assigned to a student, they have zero ways of accessing it or even knowing it exists.  You can literally assign something to a single student and then they would be the only one to access it.

Yes, I think you're right, I'm hopeful it is going to work, "in the wild" as it were. I've used and seen the restriction used for single students, this works fine and as expected. The issue was that I couldn't get it to work for a sub-set of a cohort (in this case students who would have to undertake a new "retake" assignment).

It was odd that the video I linked seemed to indicate this was possible with Groups but the established and documented method is with Sections, that actually seem preferable as students can be added on mass to a Section where as its "+" or drag and drop for Groups.

Its going to be a while before I test this out with students for real, but thank you for the responses.
