[ARCHIVED] Assigning Groups of Specific Students to Modified Assignments/Quizzes

It would be amazing if Canvas could allow teachers to create subgroups in order to assign specific students accommodated and/or modified work through Canvas without having to type each student's name, particularly when 90% of a class gets 1 assignment and you have to type each of their names individually in that assignment.  Then, go to the accommodated/modified assignment and type each student's name there.  This takes a great deal of time.  I see it also valuable with Pre-AP in identifying the differing levels within that class and being able to differentiate work according to student needs as well.

Does Canvas have a way to group students so that I don't have to type their specific names into each assignment or quiz?  Thanks!

I am having a similar issue.  I have a large portion of my students who are in a Mastery Path for Sex Education and the rest are not allowed to view the content that those students have.  I had new assignments made after the Mastery Paths were created, so the only way I can assign to the students in the Mastery Path and not the students in the Non Sex Ed Curriculum is to individually type all the names in.  I tried to do it as a "Group" assignment graded individually so I could just put that in, but it didn't work because if one student uploaded their assignment it went to everyone in that group.

Infinite Campus as our class list and we can just check or uncheck the students we don't want assigned to that assignment.  THAT would be extremely helpful here!

@AIMEEPARKERSON and @laurie_merrick What you want to do is create a section for those students.  All items (quizzes, assignments, and discussions) can be assigned to sections.  Groups is really just for group assignments.

Once you have created a section, here is how you assign stuff specifically to that section without having to type out all the students (this is an example for an assignment):

So, I would create two sections for the issue you described. One for students who can have the Sex Ed content and one for those that can't.  Students can be in multiple sections so you can leave your students in the main section of the course and then also assign them in this new one.  Then follow the steps in the second link I shared.

I will be honest, I think this should all work fine with mastery paths but I have not really tested that aspect of it.

Thank you! I was so excited when I saw your reply.  Everything worked great, it even allowed me to check the assignments to pass back in SIS, but then I got a warning message on all the assignments that said it couldn't find the due date.  All of them have a due date on them.  I am wondering if it is because they were already previously assigned?  I am going to try this on the next assignment and see if that works.
