Assuming that you are an instructor...yes, you can get notified when students submit assignments to you. This is all controlled by your personal notification settings.
If you look under the "Course Activities" heading, you'll see a line for "All Submissions". If you hover over any of the text on that page, a little pop-up description will tell you a bit more about what the notification specifically does.
