Can you say a bit more about what you're trying to do?

Hi Christine,

I’m an elementary resource teacher. I have students grouped by skill—some across grade levels. I can’t see a hierarchical view of what I’ve done, so I’m not sure I can even do what I want.

Here’s what’s in my head:

What I see:

Mod: All Math

Sections: Math1, Math 2, Math 3 (Each section containing its own assign, quiz, discuss, etc)

Mod: All Reading

Sections: Reading 1, Reading 2, Reading 3, Reading Comprehension

Etc.

What I want my students to see:

Mod: All Math

Section: Math 2 (for that student-I understand how to put them into sections.)

Mod: All Reading

Section: Reading 1, Reading Comprehension (for that student).

Then, my special ed students are not overwhelmed by seeing too much content or picking through all of the sections to find their work.

Hope this makes sense. Please let me know if there is an easier way to do this-perhaps I should use groups?

Hmmmm. That does sound challenging. I wonder if you assign certain assignments to particular students and have them use the Assignments tab (would need to really think about how to name assignments (maybe number them so they would appear in numerical order?). I'm not sure if they would only see the assignments that they were responsible for? How do I view differentiated assignments with different due dates in a course? 

The other thing I can think of is maybe using Mastery Paths but that would probably entail students knowing in which group they are placed before they would then be guided only to the assignments/materials for them. https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26231-how-do-i-use-masterypaths-in-course-modules 

Hopefully, someone with more experience with this type of differentiation will see this and chime in.

Hi,  @edie_marrs , we haven't heard from you in a bit and hope that you have arrived at a solution that works for you.

Groups in Canvas are designed to accommodate collaborative activities rather than the use case you've described. You're on the right track with your idea of sections, but those are not created in modules: they're created in the People tab. Assuming your school allows instructors to create sections on their own, you could create a section for each set of students and then use the differentiated assignments functionality Christine referenced to set the appropriate accommodations for each section.

I ended up just opening 16 modules and sorting my students into sections. They will get used to looking for the correct module.
