[ARCHIVED] Canvas glitch?

why does canvas keep submitting tests/quizzes when I haven't pressed to start it. I would only click on the tab to see what it says then exit it out to do it later. then the next day it says it submitted at 6 AM when I wasn't even on canvas at the time. any ideas on why it happens to me? it happens more than once.

Hi  @rios_lupita08  Welcome to the Canvas Community!

When you click the Take The Quiz button, Canvas counts that as an attempt. This is not a glitch, it is an intended behavior to prevent cheating - you could look up all the answers before you take the quiz.

the thing is I never push the take the quiz button I just open the page of the quiz. to view the information like what chapter it's gonna be on etc. then the next day it says I completed it when I never took it.

I'm having this issue with my students as well. Is there a solution?

When checking "Moderate the Quiz", I noticed that one of my students clocked 58 mins to complete a 10-item quiz which I have set at 20 minutes. Her quiz has several unanswered items, which is unusual.  When I asked her about what happened, she said she had responded to those items (only her answers to the short answer questions showed up but not on the multiple choice) and that she had a similar experience in the past.

What could be the reason/s for this behavior of Canvas quizzing?

@gsiapco I have seen this when a student fails to hit "submit" for some reason.  Could be they forgot, they got disconnected from the internet, or they purposely did not submit it.  Then when they get back on (or if you use the "until" time function and that time hits) Canvas will automatically submit it on their behalf.  The easiest thing to do is to look at the quiz log and see if they have a submission and if not (should be the last entry).  If not, you will probably notice something like them actively taking the exam and then the log has a gap of time and then some sort of entry like "viewing a question" or Canvas submitted.  What this tells you is that while it shows 58 min, it is because it never got properly submitted.  I have seen logs that indicate days have passed for a 60 min exam but when I look at the quiz log, it is clear they were really only active for 45 minutes or something very reasonable and just never submitted so the clock does not stop.  Since they are not truly active, Canvas allows the clock to continue but as soon as Canvas detects activity again, it immediately cuts them off and submits the quiz/test for them.

Thank you for the response, Nick. I checked the log and saw the student's answers which were logged to have been answered at 52:24 mins after she started taking the quiz. Those answers did not show up (i.s., items were marked as unanswered) on the Speedgrader, though. Could it be because the answers were given after the 20-min limit? Since I set a time limit (20 mins), why did Canvas not force-submit the quiz when time was up?

I would think it is because the 20 minutes were up but I have never seen Canvas actually let them answer any questions when that has happened.  For me I always see "Viewed question X" and at the exact same time is a Canvas forced submission.  So basically as soon as they try and access the quiz again, it is getting submitted based on it being past the given time.
