[ARCHIVED] Canvas has given grade even though no submission

I have a teacher who has several students who have not even signed in much less submitted any work, but they have grades in the gradebook.  The assignments were mainly quizzes that grade automatically.  Everything on the quiz settings seems to be correct.  We can't figure it out and now the teacher isn't sure who actually should be getting grades and who shouldn't .

In the Grades settings section (gear icon in upper right corner) there is a setting to automatically grade missing submissions.  It shouldn't be enabled by default, but that is one place I'd start looking to see if it could be related to those mystery grades being entered.
