[ARCHIVED] Does Course Material Remain Proprietary?

Hello,

I'm an  administrator at a National Guard military academy. We want to offer some of our courses online, but we were told we could not use Google Classroom because course material loaded on to that platform would become property of Google. 

If I load military course material on Canvas (unclassified) will that information remain proprietary to the National Guard?

Greetings MAJ Merritt,

The short answer to your question is, it depends.  If you load content into an instance of Canvas that is contracted for by an entity such as a university or college, the policies of that entity will apply to content ownership.  If you load content into Free for Teacher, which is an instance of Canvas that Instructure provides free of cost, you will retain ownership of your content.  If you choose to share content into Commons, a global content repository, then anyone, either globally or within the consortium you share it with, will be able to download it.  However, you would have to make a deliberate decision to share it in the first place.  Anything you upload to this global Canvas Community will by shared under a Creative Commons license.
