The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December.

Is anyone delivering electronic reserves (book chapters, articles, etc.) via Canvas? Our Technology Librarian is investigating how other institutions are integrating E-Reserves with Canvas. The are looking to change from their current E-Reserve system but would like the capability to retain control of obtaining copyright permission and securing the artifact, but make it easily accessible within the Canvas course.
Would love to hear how others are addressing E-Reserves with course in collaboration with their libraries.
I too am in a similar situation. We are looking to invest in a copyright management system/ reserves system that works well in the canvas environment and really would love some guidance or feedback on what others are doing/ using!
We do not use this LTI at our school, but I am only posting here so that you have the link to look at... Have you investigated this? Edu App Center: eReserve Plus Reading List and Copyright System
No, thank you!! I will add this to our list!
Hello Mary Ann,
We are using EQUELLA for this. The workflow is for the academic to compile a list of articles, chapters and books and to send that to the research librarian, who then makes those items available through EQUELLA, which appears in the course menu. The lecturer then either makes a page available with all listings, or can populate each module with the links relevant to it.
I hope this helps,
Andrew
Thank you!! Not familiar with Equella, but will definitely look into this. The process you describe is similar to what we currently do with the list submission and creation of materials available to be uploaded/ linked (whichever is permitted via the usage rights) into the course space. Right now we are looking for a system that can manage the rights; provide notice for licenses that may expire (videos, articles, etc.); and run reports per course, per semester, etc.; and tag items with particular usage rights to best monitor use. These are just a few of the "would like to have" regarding the external system.
Thank you, again!
Touchy subject, but for those using a third party vendor, would any one be able to ball park the costs? We are going through the project proposal process and the University would like to know costs. Thank you!!!
We are giving the Canvas Admins area a little bit of love (especially questions that are really, really old) and just want to check in with you. This will also bring this question new attention.
Were you able to find an answer to your question? Also, if this question has been answered by one of the previous replies, please feel free to mark that answer as correct.

Thank you for marking this as answered. Given that there are multiple approaches, there is not one response over another that is correct.
As an update, our librarians decided to upload/add the files directly to the courses - either by providing them to the faculty or for the faculty using a customized course reserve role that we created within the system. Thank you to @Chris_Hofer , @a1222217 , and @mstrecke for the various resources and approaches.
We created a course reserve course role where our library/course reserve staff could build content and upload files directly to a course if preferred by the faculty.
