[ARCHIVED] Examples of using short_name and long_name?

We are planning our first semester in Canvas next summer, and are working through some of the options available in SIS imports.  I have been struggling to determine a protocol for applying the short_name (aka Reference Code, aka Course Code) and long_name (aka Course Name, aka Name).

Both fields appear on the course card on the Dashboard, with the long_name appearing more prominent (on top, bold).  However, the short_name is what appears in the breadcrumb menu and on the home page throughout a course.

I suppose there are a number of possibilities, but can anyone provide an example of what sort of data you include in either of these fields?  We would like to include the course designation (BIOL 101), the days/times, control number(s) (section ID), and Term, but I'm unsure of the best way to assign this information.

In Bb, there is just a single Course Name, which we have been using as follows:

EXAMPLE:   BIOL 101 - (MW 2-2:50PM) #1234 (FA15)

We use the following short and long naming convention:

Short Name: ENSC 3710 01

Long Name: ENSC 3710 01 15FQ Essentials of Geology

Using your nomenclature:

Long Name: ENG-101-01 FA15 - College Composition I

Short Name: ENG-101-01

Where 'ENG' is the department, '101' is the course, and '01' is the section.

Long Name: ENC1101 (123456) - College Composition

Short Name: ENC1101 (123456)

The "123456" is the course reference number, being unique to every course available. The parenthesis are not my choice, but it works fine. Previously in Bb, we used dashes which I personally prefer. Such as ENC1101-123456.

We allow our faculty to change the course name, so some of them change the long name to something like:

ENC 1101 - College Composition 10:10 - 11:00 TPP 211

ENC1101 (143939) -College Composition 10:10 am - 11:00 am MWF

Since we do use the Term codes in Canvas, we no longer put the term information into the long/short name, but rather include it only in the SISID.

We use some JavaScript that hides the course code from the breadcrumb and home page and replaces it with the course name.

We use our SIS (PeopleSoft) to take care of much of the naming.  Professors cannot change their course name.  We base this on instructional mode, campus code, and class meeting information days of week fields.  I spent a lot of time coming up with a naming scheme that was rather short but useful.  The term is not in the course name since the term shows up in the navigation menu and in other places. 

Online, individual section

POS2041: United States Federal Government (Online) 41261

Short:  POS2041 41261

Campus course, individual section (in parentheses is the campus and days of week class meets)

POS2041: United States Federal Government (SLM-MW) 41388

Short:  POS2041 41388

Crosslisted courses end in MRG because they were used to this in their class names from previous LMS's and they felt lost without it. 

Online, crosslisted

POS2041: United States Federal Government (Online) MRG

Short:  POS2041 Online

Campus course, crosslisted (in parentheses is the campus and days of week class meets if they all meet same days)

POS2041: United States Federal Government (OVE) MRG

Short:  POS2041 OVE
