Is there a way to export individual question banks as separate files, rather than exporting specific quizzes and/or the entire course? Thank you.

 @sarahs , as you've already surmised, you can export a quiz, but not an individual question bank, as a file. These are the steps to create a quiz from a question bank and then export it as a file:

1. Make a single, unpublished quiz selecting each of the questions from the question bank.
2. Export that quiz via course Settings > Export Course Content > Type: Quiz > and select only your new quiz.
3. Download that newly created export.
4. You can share that file; they, in turn, would choose QTI zip for the Type and then select the new quiz export to be processed
5. The import will create a quiz and the associated question bank. You can then delete the quiz if desired.

Here are some other methods of sharing quiz questions:

• Question banks can be bookmarked and shared from course to course. Once a user bookmarks a question bank, that question bank becomes available in his or her other courses as well. This lesson from the Canvas Guides explains that: How do I bookmark a Question Bank in my course?​
• Some schools use Canvas Commons to share content. For more information, see How do I share a resource to Commons?
• Other schools opt to create a shared repository within their accounts so that numerous teachers can draw from the same resources.  @clong ​ suggests that your school can "create a new course shell (with the teachers who are collaborating enrolled as TAs or Teachers) in this course. This course can then serve as a space to build and house these quizzes and then they can import the quizzes into any of the courses they teach."

This method is one that Rube Goldberg would be proud of. There are so many messy aspects of Canvas Quizzes  and I don't get the sense that any of them are going to be addressed by New Quizzes, sadly. Make the exporting of Question Banks at least as easy as Quizzes.

This does, indeed work. 

Also the import function.  I exported an exam which I made in 2002 using TestGen 7.5 using the QTI option and imported it into a "testing" quiz.  It was imported successfully and it also imported the image ( a .png ). 

However, when one is using something like TestGen one should, as Tim Gunn so eloquently directs the Project Runway aspirants...be very THOUGHTFUL... about the choice of shoes from the wall, oooh...sorry...be very thoughtful about the actual "thing" that is being exported.  There is an absolute plethora of options in something like TestGen, and the "descriptions"  of the "file types and where they would go" was intended, methinks, for the "untrained".   This oversimplification / overexplanation of the file types can lead to the wrong results.  However, the wrong result can merely be deleted and another option attempted.

At first I was slightly uneasy about Canvas seemingly only being able to "move files around within canvas".  Would I be creating a lot of exams within Canvas and not be able to export them to the system of another college or, if my present college changes the LMS system, what then?

The QTI import / export is............FOR MOST OF US.... something of a "well i only make so many exams and don't really have a way to TEST what will go in and out easily".

After researching QTI and finding the very timely article at Wikipedia, > search for QTI Wikipedia< , I see that what "seems" to be the majority of open source systems, SAKAI being one, are supported.

Thus, one "should" only have a problem importing from a proprietary system to QTI but if it "says" that it will so export then, from my small experience it should work.

Then the only concern would be exporting back INTO the proprietary format.  I have not so attempted and probably, at this stage will not.

It would be nice to be able to export account-level question banks to GIFT format. Without having to export content from Canvas then import it back to another LMS to get it to GIFT format.

I would encourage adding to Canvas the functionality to export question. The diffusion of quizzes and question banks across different locations makes Canvas already difficult. Now I have to create fake quiz just to export a question bank.

This answer is no longer accurate.  Exporting a quiz that has questions linked to question banks does NOT export the associated banks.
