[ARCHIVED] How can I tell as student turned in an assignment late after I graded it?

I am a new user and I did search posts to answer my question, but was unable to find what I needed.  My apologies in advance if this has already been solved.

So, we are 100 % remote learning, and I have students turn in math assignments via online upload (pics of their work).  I then go through and grade them.  I mark them 'M' to indicate missing, but I accept late work.  When student later submit their work, I don't think I can easily tell that they have turned in their work (I currently go through speed grader, but have to check every 'M' to see if there is now a pic).  Before grading, it lets me know that there is a file to see, but after grading, it doesn't.

I am wondering if there is a way to see that a file has been uploaded even though there is an 'M' for a grade.  The 'M' is less about the grade, and more to communicate that I haven't received their work.

This may not be a complete answer to your question, but I noticed that you said you use a "M" to mark a student's assignment as "Missing".  By chance, do you use the "Missing" and "Late" labels that Canvas already provides to you?  (This may save you a little bit of manual work.)

Thank you for the reference.  I don't use the defaults - mainly because I didn't know how/if I could change them as I am counting missing as 50% credit.  It is just a way to try and manipulate %s to better match standards based grading.  I am now wondering if Canvas treats their default 'missing' in such a way that the teacher would know when a student submitted work after it was marked absent.  I know I get an email saying someone uploaded something, but I just want to open my gradebook and see if someone has submitted something after it was graded.  I don't think a first submission is treated the same as a re-submission.  I think the color changes for a re-submission - so that should be easier to spot.  But this is a first submission after I have graded it as missing.
