I submitted a comment twice while trying to figure out the clunky process of adding a file, and I want to delete the duplicate comment. As so often the simplest tasks waste lots of time. Any help? Or is it best to just use email?

Hello dbradbury ,
I believe you can't edit assignment comments/feedback in SpeedGrader, but you surely can delete them by clicking the X next to the comment within the Assignment Comments section (right-hand side of the SpeedGrader).
Hope this helps!

Yes, clicking on the X will delete the submission comment.
When I'm grading an Assignment, I also often "hide" the grades until I have completed the class set. That allows me to go back and fix any problems with grades and/or comments before my students see them. Once the class set is ready to go, then I "post" the grades. When you're in Speedgrader, look for the "eyeball" icon.
Hi,
Thanks for the responses, but I'm afraid we aren't really getting anywhere. There is no "x" to delete comments. Here is a screengrab. I would like to be able to delete comments such as the one in the red box..
Hello dbradbury,
I am not sure why you do not have the Delete icon next to the comment. Someone from Canvas can help.
Here is the image of the Assignment Comments and Delete icon at my end.

Thanks!
