[ARCHIVED] How do I disable my students' access to last year's class?

First time user with Canvas.  Hopefully this makes sense.  I need to know how I cannot allow my students access to my class I created last year and only allow them access to the class this year without deleting last year's class?I just don't want my students to be able to access the old class, I want to make the new class the only one they can access.  I would hope none of the students would click into the old class, but I know there will be a few that will.  So, I want to eliminate that issue if possible.

 @shortlc , welcome to Canvas and the Community! Were any of your students from this year in your class last year? So if you go to your class from last year and click on People do any of your this year students show up? If not, then you're good to go and they can't see your last year course. If some (or all) of them are in your People list from last year's course then what you can do is go to Settings in the course, make sure the course end date is a date in the past, and then check the box next to this option - "Restrict students from viewing course after end date." This will prevent any students from last year's course accessing the course.

How you conclude (restrict access) a course depends on how the Canvas Admins at your school have things set up, so you may want to first check with them. Typically a school will integrate their student information system (SIS) with Canvas, and define terms, and term start and  end dates, which will control user access. Again, check with your Canvas admins.

If you use Free-for-Teachers, this will be your job.

• Go to your old Canvas classroom,
• Click on Settings,
• Scroll down to the Course start/stop 3end dates fields, and enter an end date if one has not already been entered,
• Then click the checkbox for "Users can only participate in the course between these dates",
• Scroll to the bottom, and click "Update Course Details".
• Finally, you will need click the "Conclude this Course" link on the right side of the settings page if you want to restrict students from being aqble to even view the course.

 @kmeeusen , wouldn't this still allow the students to SEE the course, just not submit any work to it?

I've never used "conclude" that way, we do a soft conclude using terms, but from my understanding conclude doesn't prevent students from seeing the course, just submitting assignments. I thought the only thing that prevented students from SEEING a course is the "Restrict students from viewing course after end date."

I just checked this guide - How do I conclude a course at the end of a term? - and it indicates that "When a course is completed and you want to provide read-only access to the course, you may be able to conclude the course manually in Canvas."  and then later on it states "Once a course is concluded, if you do not want students to be able to view the course at all, you can restrict students from viewing prior courses."

If you want to continue to use the same course shell and not create a new one importing content from the last, You could create a new section for the new students and close by date the old section.
