[ARCHIVED] How do I export selected items from a course (instead of exporting the entire course)?

I have both a free for teachers account and an institutional account.  I would like to export a course from my institutional account to my fft account, but the course is too large.  Can I choose only the items I want to save and export them?

Hi  @linda_heidler  Thank You for your question.

One possibility is to create an empty course shell and use the course import tool to bring in the content you select.

Hi Bobby - Thanks for your reply.  When I try to import, I select the file I want, then click select specific content.  Before I can select the content, I have to click upload.  When I do that it gives me a pop up bubble that says "Your migration cannot exceed 500 MB" and I cannot go any further to select the content I want to import.  Any suggestions?

HI Linda. This does not sound like the expected behaviour. 

So you are in the course you are wanting to add content to from another course? 

Then go to Settings. (bottom left of screen)

Then click Import Course Content. (right hand side of screen)

Then click in the Content Type field drop down arrow and click Copy a Canvas Course.

Fill in the field where it says Search for a Course and ensure the course you are copying from pops up. 

Then, this is very important, fill in the option 'select specific content'.

Then click 'import'

Then click 'select content'

Then select specific content from the course list of content that pops up. There is an arrow next to options if you select that then more options show up of content within. Even more choice available there.

Then click the final 'select content' button.

Hi Bobby,

I have imported material like you described. Right now I'm trying to move material from my institutional account into my free for teachers account. Since it's two different accounts, the course I want to copy doesn't show up as an option if I choose copy a canvas course. Here are the steps I am taking:

• I exported the course from my institutional course. The file is saved as an .ISMCC.

• Then in my fft account, I chose the import file type "canvas export file" I could also choose to "unzip the .zip to a folder" or "angel export .zip".

• When I choose to import from a canvas export file, it tells me that the file is too big, and won't let me choose only the items I want to import the same way it does when I am copying a course.

I've done this with smaller courses and haven't had a problem because I was importing the entire course. When I am exporting a course, is there a way to choose to only export some of it so that the course is smaller? Any other ideas?

Sorry I have taken so long to understand. I think that by exporting you only get the whole thing.

What about putting the course into canvas Commons then uploading it into your new course from there?

I think that will work a treat.

What I really needed were the quizzes, and there was an option to export only them.
