Hi all,
At present we send physical copies of assignments to our external examiners (EE) to review. The usual rule of thumb is that all assignments that received firsts, fails and borderline marks (plus a random sample) are seen by the EE, so that in a batch of 50 essays, perhaps only 20-30 will be reviewed.
I've been looking for a way of replicating this process in Canvas, but at present am drawing a blank. It seems as though it's case of all or nothing. I've had a look at the Observer role, but this looks as though it gives access to a student on a global level, where as we'd like this on an assignment level. Have any of you had any luck in being able to allocate specific assignments (once they've been marked) to an EE? Some of our tutors are concerned that if the EEs have access to everything they'll get overwhelmed.
Any help or suggestions will be gratefully received!
Many thanks,
Matt
Solved! Go to Solution.
In theory this might be possible Matt
Let me see If I have this right.
The assignments were created and students all submitted.
The work was then marked and you want to now allocate an external examiner to view a selection of the submissions but not all submissions?
You could create a section and allocate the external to the section and copy the specific students, it should be able to be done retrospectively
Have you looked at using sections?
We use these for allocation of markers
Add the students whose work the markers are going to mark to a section e.g. Marker One You could then add the externals as TA or teachers but only to that section Marker One and specify they only see those students in their section, see red box
Hi Robert,
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if using sections would work for us, unless they can be created retrospectively once the essays have been marked? If we could add assignments that have already been marked to a section this could be a workable solution.
Cheers.

Having just run a very quick and some might say dirty test, it does work.
I created a new section - added the external to the section, ensuring no access to other sections.
Added the student to the section
Logged in as dummy external and could only see the students in that section
Fantastic! Thanks, Robert. Would the EE have access to all of that students assignments then, or just the ones for that particular module/assessment?
you limit the External to only the ones in his section. This can be done when enrolling the External on the course or you can edit his access levels from the people page and edit the user
This is what it looks like if the user can only mark the students in their section , obviously you can change this to all students if you wish
Thanks for your help, Robert!
