Is there a shortcut or way to bulk mark missing assignments? Currently, you have to manually mark each student’s assignment missing. This gets very tedious when you have multiple assignments and over a hundred students.
Stephanie,
I use the Set Default Grade option. From the Grades view, click the triangle (or three dots) next to the Assignment name and choose Set Default Grade. Enter the grade you want to give to all of the none graded items and it will automagically add that grade for them.
Here is a guide page about it https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-12834-415255002

Thanks. I do know about the default grade option. I’m wondering if there is a shortcut to mark assignments “missing” or not “missing” without having to go to the grade detail tray for each of my students (140 students).
I'm not sure what you mean by marking them "missing"? Do you mean like adding a comment to each one saying it's missing or not?

Ah ha; it's the new gradebook you are talking about. Now I get what you are trying to do. I don't find any way to do that or any information in the guides that indicate that it's possible. If the Assignments are set for online submission and you use Due Dates, then they will get marked Missing if nothing is turned in before that date. That's about all I've got for idea.
Oh, and I also got a chuckle about the screen shot because you have about the same test students as I have in my instances of Canvas.
Very annoying. Easy Grade Pro has this feature.
I agree this would be a very valuable tool. I think they could add this feature easily as an option to filling the missing marks with a grade. Or, it should fill in as missing when the due date is past, not when the access date is past. I always give extra time, but I want that extra visual to reinforce to students that I'm expecting it to be submitted. These days I don't count off for late. I just want it done.
Marking missing assignments in bulk is also needed for Studio video quizzes embedded in an assignment. Because those quizzes are submitted as "external tool," Canvas doesn't automatically mark them as missing past the due date, according to their documentation, even though the due date is set in a Canvas assignment.
As a former programmer, I have to say that I have not been impressed with Instructure.
You would think that "MI" would work the same way that "EX" works.
This would make it so much easier.
Don't know if anyone still is wondering about this, but typing MI into the gradebook DOES work for me. Looks like this was adding in January of 2023! Wish I had found out sooner.
The "previously mentions" option of setting late assignments to automatically grade to 0% and mark as missing DOES work for some classes, but NOT for other!!!
BUT one of my fellow teachers found this youtube to apply bulk missing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=39gm4hM_c4Y
It is not automatically updated like the other option, BUT it is A LOT faster than trying to mark each assignment for each student as missing!!!
