@sbeck1 , what we do is create a resource course in Canvas and add every student who is using Canvas to this course - this is all done programmatically. We add them by semester so that way we know which students go with which semester. Then if I want to send them all a message I can easily go to the Inbox in Canvas and send a specific section (so semester of students) a message.
One way through the front end of Canvas to at least get their names is to go to the Admin side of Canvas, click on Settings (bottom left), click on the Report tab, and then run the "Students with no submissions" report for the summer (or fall) term - this will give you an excel spreadsheet of all students taking a class for the summer (or fall). This only works because for us summer hasn't started, so none of the students taking classes in the summer have submitted any anything. Yet, email addresses aren't included, just names and the user SIS ID.
So no, ultimately there isn't a good way to do this through Canvas unless you set something up like we did with our Resource Course.
