[ARCHIVED] Making Learning Accessible through Accommodations

At our virtual school MAVA (Mass. Virtual Academy), we have been struggling with how to provide alternate and accommodated assignments in a clear and convenient way within Canvas. This affects our students who receive special education or Title 1 small group support. How have you made alternate assignments and assessments easily accessible to your struggling learners?

Hi jhazlett Welcome to the worldwide Canvas Community.  (I see you joined us in June, but this appears to be your first post.)  First of all, you are in the right group!  There are lots of folks with far better knowledge than I who are members here, and I'm here to learn from them and their great posts.  And one great post that I just wanted to make sure you've seen is this one from snugent‌ that I link to for our own faculty asking similar questions, complete with very helpful hyperlinks: Accommodating Students in Canvas .  (This was posted in the Instructional Designers‌ group, which you may also want to consider joining.)  Another possibility to consider that was created by Canvas since Susan's original post are Mastery Paths, which may be useful in certain circumstances.  You may want to check the following:

Another way to facilitate various assignments to embrace learner variability is to use: How do I assign an assignment to an individual student? Another great resource: How do I view differentiated assignments with different due dates in a course? Another champion for this topic is Laura Gibbs' Blog‌

On accessibility (making the content in Canvas accessible to assistive technology), using the tutorial General Accessibility Design Guidelines‌ then using a scanning tool: 1) WAVE or 2) UDOIT Version 2.2.0 "Altoona"‌ to confirm accessibility.
