The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
With the new RCE activated, students have discovered a work-around for uploading documents in assignments that are intended to only collect text entry submissions. Even though the instructors are isolating submission types to online --> text entry, students use the new RCE toolbar insert tab to locate 'upload document', rather than copying/pasting the contents of the document as text in the text entry space.
Anybody discover a way to turn off the 'upload document' feature in an assignment when text entry is the only method of submission chosen by the instructor?

Hi @DR-BRZ
I'm not finding a way to limit that functionality.
I would suggest making sure in the directions that file uploads won't be accepted and result in a grade of zero. Once word get's out that you're serious about it, they will quit.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestion. It pleases me to know your recommended suggestion aligns with the advice/suggestion I have offered the instructors.
I do hope the developers will incorporate some limitations to ‘access’ for the insert/upload tools in the NEW RCE as this ‘back door access’ to uploading a file from a personal device negates the sole selection of ‘text entry’ submission types for assignments.
That's funny, as I almost didn't post it thinking others would feel it was 'too harsh.'
I don't think the Instructure developers anticipated this back-door when they implemented the new rich content editor to the online submission tool. If limiting access is something your staff really need, you can submit an idea request here. https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Idea-Conversations/idb-p/ideas
I would suggest asking for the choice to select a limited text editor for online submission assignments, one that only allows text.
Thank you for the additional suggestion. I will definitely click on the link and submit the issue. I have a meeting with our institution's Canvas Liaison today and will be discussing it with him as well. Thanks again!
