Hello everybody
Happy New Year!
The January release includes a new feature permitting users to associate their profile with personal pronouns.
However, I wonder how this works on accounts with several languages? At UCPH, we use both the English and Danish version of Canvas, since we have a lot of international staff and students.
Can a user customize one set of pronouns for the English version and another set for the Danish version? If yes, how does this work?
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Ruth

Hallo!
That is an interesting question. The personal pronouns allow you as an admin to establish what text values people can choose from for pronoun choices. These text values are agnostic of account language settings. The way the feature was designed, if you enable pronouns at the account level, you should then see pronoun settings in the sub-accounts and have the option to set different text values for different sub-accounts. If that is not the behavior you actually see when the feature goes live, please contact Support.

Hi Scott,
thank you for your reply - really helpful. So it is as I thought: text values are agnostic of language settings. Maybe this is something Instructure could develop further? I guess many organizations - at least in Europe - have a multilingual approach in their communication with instructors and students.
In our case, setting different values would not solve the problem.
@ruh , the pronoun feature will most likely be iterated over time, so if an array of pronoun selections that varies depending on the user's language selection is functionality you'd like to see added, please share it in the Ideas space as a new feature idea; How do I create a new feature idea in the Canvas Community? provides guidance.
Hi Again Ruth,
You are very welcome. After speaking with the Product Manager overseeing the development of this feature my understanding is that the way it is designed currently, if you enable pronouns at the root account you should be able to specify different sets of text values in different sub-accounts. So, you could let people choose Dutch language pronouns in one and Chinese, say, it another. This would require people to manually set their pronouns differently from one sub-account to another. However, if a user is only in one sub-account or another I guess to them the whole issue will not be apparent. Like Stefanie mentioned, if you wanted people to set pronouns in one language and have those pronouns automatically translate into other languages based on sub-account language settings I guess you could always create a feature idea submission for that improvement.
