[ARCHIVED] Practice Quiz vs. Graded Quiz?

In the current environment of mass online schooling, I'd like students to take a graded multiple choice quiz, but only count it if it improves their overall grade. I really want students to be able to see their scores, in the Gradebook, but to override those that bring their overall grade down. I assume I can override by deleting the grade, but then they cannot see how they did, true? Also, I do not want students to be able to see answers until after the quiz clases to all students. Is that possible?

Hey  @steinert  and thanks for coming into the community to ask these questions.

You can have graded or ungraded quizzes and surveys.  There is not a specifically designed feature where a quiz will function as ungraded when the outcome would be negative for students overall but act as graded when it would raise their grade.  You could manually assign points to another assignment which would be labor intensive.  Another idea potentially would be let them have access to a graded quiz if they score above a certain score on the practice quiz via module requirements.  As far as not letting students see their feedback until after everyone has taken the quiz, that is possible in the quiz settings.

How do I set up my ungraded quiz so that students can see their score and review the questions and answers to improve their understanding, only after the quiz has closed for all students? I can't seem to find this anywhere in the Canvas guides.

I'm fine with entering positive grades into a second assignment, but from what I've read about ungraded quizzes students do not see their score without having to return to the quiz assignment page. Will they be able to review the answers using an ungraded quiz?

Hi  @steinert  in the quiz settings after selecting the quiz type as a Practice Quiz you should be able to see a box where you may determine if/when students see their responses and the correct responses.  Are you able to find this?  

You are correct that students will need to go to the quiz page to review their responses/correct answers as a Practice Quiz does not populate the grade book but the behavior of what they see should be dictated by the options you set.

It may not work in this situation, but it isn't bad to keep in mind that if you use Assignment Groups you can ask Canvas to drop "x" number of lowest scores (see How do I create rules for an assignment group? ).  If you knew the total number of quizzes you had and how many you wanted to keep, you might be able to use this setting so that as time progresses the scores that most harm a student's overall grade are discarded automatically. There is a feature idea open for keeping the highest "x" scores in addition to dropping scores here, https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/9718-include-a-keep-highest-scores-rule-instead-of-ignore-lowe....  It seems like this may be a good option if implemented at some point so you might consider voting it up.

Thanks for your help, Eric. Will students be able to see their incorrect answers immediately upon completing the Practice Quiz, or will those also be hidden until the correct answers are revealed, on the day and time of my choosing?

Hi  @steinert  in my testing, if you indicate in the quiz that students can see their responses but not the correct answers until a particular time, they can see what they entered for the question and if it is correct or incorrect.  This obviously gives the student a bit of information about what the correct response may be.  You can indicate to not allow students to see their responses in which case no information about what they entered or the correct/incorrect answer is available after the quiz, and then go back and change the settings later.

In New Quizzes you have a few more options as to what students see when they submit a quiz (see below).  While there is no "practice" quiz setting in New Quizzes, you can indicate that the assignment does not count toward their final grade, have in placed in an assignment group that is worth 0% of the final grade, or it appears just make the point value of the assignment overall 0.
