[ARCHIVED] Preview in MacOS does not show Speedgrader notes

When I download an assignment that has been annotated in Speedgrader and open it in Preview I can see the in-text annotations such as highlighting (not obscuring text, by the way), a scribble, a strikethrough, and a box which are the ones I tested. However, none of the accompanying text notes are visible (the text fields that appear outside of the document borders in Speedgrader). They are however visible in Acrobat. Some of my students have been complaining that they are not receiving feedback from the graders.

I am still rocking Mojave if that matters.

As much as I love the PDF format, it's always bugged me that so many different programs can open PDF files and they all can treat them differently.  I have seen what you are describing with Preview on a mac.  If you open them in Google Chrome it also displays those annotations differently but I don't recall the specifics or if it's better/worse than with Preview.

My suggestion is to let students know that their best viewing experience with annotations will be directly in Canvas, but if they do download the PDF files it's best to use Adobe Acrobat to view them.

Preview, for all of the noise about standards compliance, has always been problematic for me and I keep Acrobat around when Preview has issues.

I don't know how many students download their work as opposed to viewing it in a browser but the highlight annotations certainly don't render well on Safari - totally obscures the underlying text.
