[ARCHIVED] Quizzes: scientific notation?

Has scientific notation yet been added in the quizzes... particularly in formula based questions?  It seems like people have been asking for it a long time, but all my searches on this question seem to date to most recently six months ago. Pretty critical in the online assessment in the sciences and engineering.... especially in a large nerolment clas where you need to use formulas to reduce integrity violations (since some students don't have the proper devices yet to have an overlying proctor-engine).

If there is... is there a guide to writing these questions?

Yes - it is rather absurd that this has NOT been addressed at this point. Scientific notation is ubiquitous, not just in science and engineering, but in spreadsheets and other similar numerical contexts.

There is very limited support for positive exponents less than 21 in formula questions in classic quizzes. There is no real support for negative exponents in formula questions

Here are some recent (last few days) posts I made about this and a feature idea open for voting.

• Large and Small Exponents in Formula Questions  (May 9). Canvas will accept the scientific notation for exponents greater than 20 but counts it wrong.
• Numbers Exponentials  (May 11) This is about numeric responses, which has better support than formula questions, but there is a currently a bug in New Quizzes.

Here is a work around for using scientific notation in formula questions (classic). Define both the initial numeric value AND exponent as two different variables so that you can do your own scientific notation calculation within the answer definition.
