How can I embed a recording function within an assignment? I would like to upload PDF stories and have students record themselves reading them. Note that I teach young children with disabilities, so I'm hoping for the simplest steps possible... Thank you!

So, Assignments in Canvas have Media Submission as one of the options for an Online submission type.  This allows students upload or record audio and/or video files right into the assignment.  My suggestion is to create an Assignment and link to or embed the PDF file in the description.  Then set Submission type to Online and check the Media Submission box.  Once you get it set and published use Student View to check out how it looks and to see if you need to revise the instructions at all to help your students figure out the process.

Thank you for replying! The problem is that I can't figure out how students can scroll through the story to read the words while recording themselves... Can you please clarify? I want it to be as simple as possible for these young readers with special needs who might not have parental help. Thank you!

Yeah, I see what you mean.  It would work, but when the student clicks to record the "background" which would include the PDF file is grayed out a little and less than optimum.  Plus you need to move the recording window around a little to see everything.   I don't have any other great suggestions that don't make it more complicated such as having students use another application to create the recording, or two devices; one to record and one to view.
