[ARCHIVED] Rich Content Editor video automatic captioning for students?

I would like to have students record videos using the RCE and post them as discussion posts, rather than using text. To meet accessibility requirements, videos need to be captioned. I see there's a way for instructors to create and add caption files but this doesn't help students.

Is there an auto-caption feature within Canvas that I'm just not finding?

Do you know if your school has purchased Canvas Studio?  Studio allows students to record videos, and they can then use the auto-caption feature to generate captions for their video.  The captions aren't 100% accurate, but they are pretty close.  Here are some links for you:

So, if I understand correctly, if you use the RCE Record/Upload media, there is no way for a student or faculty member to get close captioning generated at the time the video is created in the RCE - say if students want to embed a comment or  if a faculty member wanted to provide oral feedback  with close caption on an assignment to a student .  

Instead, one would have to select "upload media"  that is prepared elsewhere (say from Studio or by uploading an SVT file ).  

With this said, is there any way to deactivate just the "record" media feature from the RCE so that non-ADA compliant video content does not erroneously get recorded do to ease in doing so?  Thank you.

That is my understanding as well...if you use the "Record/Upload Media" tool/icon.  There is a way to upload a caption file for the video, but I do not believe there is a way to generate captions "on the fly" for anything you would record online.  Here are the Guides for uploading a caption file:

When a school purchases Studio, then a new button is added to the RCE.  Users would not use the "Record/Upload Media" button in the RCE to add a Studio video onto a content page.  The new Studio button essentially allows you to choose a video or audio file you've added to your Studio library and then embed that into your course page.  Check out this Guide:

At the Canvas administrator level, under their "Settings" menu >> "Settings" tab, there is a check-box option for "Disable uploads to Canvas Media from the enhanced rich content editor".  I am not sure if this is exactly what you would be looking for, but you might want to have a conversation with your school's Canvas administrator about this.  Keep in mind that turning this option on would not only affect your course, but it would affect all other instructors who teach courses in your Canvas environment...and some of those instructors might wonder what happened to that option in the RCE.  Here is the admin Guide for your reference:

@Chris_Hofer Thanks for this info. I'm checking to see if we have Canvas Studio here. The help documents you provided leave me wondering if this process will be overly cumbersome and time-consuming for students, especially when it comes to captioning a 1-2 minute video post. Auto-generated captions, such as are now available in Flipgrid, would be quite helpful for this sort of thing.

Hi @klink ...

In Studio, once you have uploaded/recorded your video, there is a button to request captioning.  (This will not work for YouTube videos.)  Once the auto-captions are ready, you will have the chance to review them for accuracy before "publishing" them.  The interface for editing the captions is a bit wonky (lots of scrolling up and down) in my opinion, but it's a lot better than trying to format a *.srt or *.vtt closed captioning file...that's for sure.  Like I said, the accuracy is pretty good...but not 100%, so it's always a good idea to check to make sure the captions are correct.
