[ARCHIVED] Student tasks/assignment/ and Gradebook

Hi everyone,

I'm a 7th grade English teacher and new to Canvas this year.

One issue I'm experiencing is this; I can't find a way to post something on Canvas that I want students to complete (graphic organizers, outlines, quick-writes, etc) that I don't plan on grading without it generating a column in the gradebook that is then blank.

I thought a workaround would be to just unpublish the assignment, but this can't be done once any students have made a submission.

The result has been a bunch of blank columns in the gradebook and many emails from parents concerned that their kids have missing work (not to mention looking in my gradebook and seeing 35 columns when there's only a few things that "count" and I want to appear in there). Any tips appreciated.

Hi @smcinture

Have you tried simply setting the assignments to "Do not count this assignment towards the final grade"? This allows students to view and submit assignments without creating a gradebook entry.

Learn how at How do I exclude an assignment from the course's final grades?

Stay safe,

Kelley
