The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
How many terms on average are active/fully available (vs read-only) in your production instance at a time?
How long on average do you tend to leave a given term active in your production instance?
Do you delete content from closed terms in order to free space in your quota?
How much data storage is typical per Canvas user?
Thanks!
We are giving the Canvas Admins area a little bit of love (especially questions that are really, really old) and just want to check in with you. This will also bring this question new attention.
Were you able to find an answer to your question? I am going to go ahead and mark this question as answered because there hasn't been any more activity in a while so I assume that you have the information that you need. If you still have a question about this or if you have information that you would like to share with the community, by all means, please do come back and leave a comment. Also, if this question has been answered by one of the previous replies, please feel free to mark that answer as correct.

We generally have 1 academic term, 1 CE term, and the default term active. Our terms are SIS pushed so there are terms available from 2012 and someone created CE terms well into the future. Our business rules allows our instructors access into shells until "I" grades are submitted and into future shells that we are actively registering students so it could be 3 terms. With that said, term concluded courses and shell conclusion with course dates are tricky to say 3 terms.
We do not archive/delete used course shells but we do delete blank (no instructor, no student, no content) shells and clean-up some user accounts (duplicates from SIS pushed, test users, etc).
Our course shells are 500 MB but instructors can request more. I can't recall our user quota but I want to say 1 GB.
I'm going to share this discussion with other spaces (Canvas Admins) so it gets more attention.

Hi,
University of Adelaide has 16 terms in 2018 with approx. 3000 course for 27,000 students. Students have access to the course during the term and then read only access until the course is deleted. Teaching staff have full access until it is deleted. We retain our courses for five (5) years and at the end of the fifth year we will delete all course for that year, unless a school asks for and extension due to accreditation needs.
We set our course to 5000 MB as default.
