Did the View gradbook with ungraded items as 0 feature get removed from the new grade book?

Caroline, yes it did.  It's not part of the new gradebook.  Personally I'm kind of glad it's gone because it only affected the teacher's view.  If you select that option the Total grade you saw might now match what students were seeing.  I would always advise teachers to not use that view and instead enter 0s for students as they missed turning things in.

In the new gradebook there is an option which you might consider where it automagically assigns 0s after the due date has passed if no assignment has been submitted.  How do I apply a Missing Submission policy in the Gradebook? 

I really like using this option because it really puts a 0 in there which affects both what the teacher sees and what the student sees.  If you don't use Due dates or don't want it to happen automagically I'd suggest using the Set Default Grade option to fill in 0s for any missing assignments after you done your grading https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-16547-4152813642

Hi Rick,

I appreciate your feedback, but we use this feature in a way that helps instructor's help students who may be close to failing a class and can identify what they need to turn in to pass. We use this feature in the last week of the term, not for the whole term. This shows the real score only to the instructor if they don't turn in anything else in so we know who is passing and who need extra help to pass. We use the 0 out if missed feature, but that doesn't help if it hasn't reached the due date. Putting a 0 on an assignment before it is due just freaks out our students. The old feature is perfect for us.

I get that and can see where not having the functionality anymore is unfortunate.  My explanation was more related to how I had seen it used wrong in the past.  At the end of the semester an instructor would set it to display ungraded items as 0 to see final grades, and enter them into our student information system, unaware that students didn't see the same grade.  Nothing like having a student seeing an A in Canvas and then wondering why their final reported grade was a B-.  And then having to explain to the teacher that the student is seeing something different than they are.
